Re: Suitable Tyres for the XE

Yes.
The tyre dealer recommended them, and said they were well suited to Northern Ireland conditions all year round.
Their advice has always been good, so I took it.
I'll see how the wear is in 20,000 miles or so.

Re: Wiper Blades

I took the Halford's recommendation for mine, and they are fine. DON'T use the Service Position for changing. I did, and it got bored half way through, and bounced the passenger arm (bladeless) onto the screen and cracked it. Heated screen as well! My local dealer told me they don't use the Service ...

Re: Suitable Tyres for the XE

My factory fit Dunlops needed replacement at 25000 miles / 3 years.
On the recommendation of my local tyre dealer, I fitted Pirelli SottoZero which seem fine - and are very quiet compared with the Dunlop.

Re: Sat Nav

Yes, the Sat Nav IS cr@p. And updating the maps is very expensive. And it doesn't alter the basic functionality that still sends you down cart tracks. For not much more than one update, I bought a large Tom-Tom with lifetime updates. And it's FAR better. I use the car satnav for local street names -...

Re: Was your previous car a Mazda 6

I had a Hyundai i40 before my XE.
Very good car.
My daughter loved it and bought it from me.
It's still performing faultlessly.

Re: Tax disc. Possibly a comeback!

Yes. I know what you mean about a delay. Years back, I was stopped in a security check by what we disparaging called"Dad's Army" - the UDR. Standard practice was to make polite conversation with the driver while the guys in the Land Rover checked the details. I was driving a car I'd just bought -and...

Re: Tax disc. Possibly a comeback!

Agree about insurance.
Other countries seem to manage it?
At least it would prove that SOMEBODY's insured to drive the car.
My certificate lists the people allowed to drive.
Should be possible to put that on a display able disc.
Although I'm not sure I'd want my name displayed on the car.

Re: Due for MOT?

Yes.
It does mean that here in N.I. the tests are consistent.
Seem to be very fair guys doing them.
Who seem to be car enthusiasts themselves.

Re: Due for MOT?

Here in Northern Ireland the tests are only done at government test centres, who have no interest in failing cars. It's years since I've had to get a test in GB - where it was a total farce. Years back, I was with a friend in an old Cortina that we were told was unsafe at one test centre (it wasn't)...

Re: Tax disc. Possibly a comeback!

Agreed. I keep the rules, and wouldn't worry about displaying that fact. Means parking wardens etc. can check instantly that the car's legal even while parked. I'm even a boring old fart that keeps (roughly) to speed limits. It's not worth breaking them. Exceed the limit by a bit - you get done. Exc...
