Jaguar XE 2.0 Diesel Review / AutoCar: http://www.autocar.co.uk/car-review/jaguar/first-drives/2015-jaguar-xe-20-diesel-r-sport-review

Should I buy one?:
As an enthusiast, you might well, because it's good to drive. Jaguar's intent was to give the XE the comfort of the best C-classes and the composure of a decent 3-series. To my mind, it exceeds both in both areas.

Whether it'll win you over in other areas is still a point up for discussion. When full-production cars arrive we'll know whether the XE is competitive or outstanding.

The most-important new Jag in decades is brimming with potential. Its competitors won't be a walkover, but the XE feels ready to take on the world. A group test beckons…

Will it tempt people away from Germany?

Interesting - and vital - question. The XE is certainly good enough, a properly thorough effort. The only question is whether it's actually different enough from the German competition to give people a good reason to shift. We would.

It looks strong value. Every car has the decent new satnav system. The base 163 SE model sneaks under £30k and gets cloth on the seats, but that's no hardship. Strangely, you have to climb a couple of trims to R-Sport to get LED running lights. Second-level Prestige (leather) with the 180 and manual box would be £31,275.

Although the numbers look good for the XE S, it just lacks the final edge of excitement that makes the best super-saloons so appealing. It's not neck-
snappingly fast, but then it is over £10k cheaper than an M3, still great fun to drive and even better looking. And it leaves a nice space for a seriously hot XE developed by Jaguar's Special Vehicle Operations team.

The Jaguar XE may look conservative, but when you see it on the road it has real presence. Jaguar is developing a look that will extend through the range, from the XJ through XF and on to the F-Pace SUV, with wide, slim headlights, an upright grille and a low, sleek bonnet.

The J-Blade LEDS on the XE accentuate the width at the front, as do the F-Type-style rear lights. The low roof-line at the back gives the car a coupe-like stance adding to the drama, with big wheels pushed out to the far corners. The inside is simple yet stylish, with a wraparound fascia similar to that on the XJ, which makes the car feel welcoming inside.
