To avoid overfilling get hold of the more expensive bottle (about 1.8 Ltrs) and use that to top up. They stop over filling as just the right amount is dispensed. I have a Redex one which I top up and reuse. I never let the Adblue run down and top up either weekly or monthly depending on the journeys I do. 6 years on and no problems so far ( I have repeated myself again but it's how I have always done it)

So what do we think the average consumption of adblue is on the new engines? I think I read that it's approx a litre of adblue for every 500 miles, and that the adblue tank is 12 litres in size, is that correct?

I've had this warning 3 times now. The first time I booked the car in but just on a whim I plugged my Torque OBDII reader in and scanned for codes, it didn't show any but I pressed "CLEAR CODES" anyway. The warning then changed from quality to dosing error, then after 20+ miles, it all cleared. I thought this might have been a coincidence and canceled my garage appointment. The next time it happened it was after I had had a DEF level low warning and I had filled it up. This time I cleaned the injector (it had not crystals on it and was clean) and I ordered some DEF from Jaguar and was prepared to drain the tank. I decided to try the scan and clear again. It followed the same pattern of saying "NO FAULTS FOUND" on the scanner but I still clicked "CLEAR FAULT CODES". The car did the same thing, it changed from quality to dosing then 20+ miles of driving the warning disappeared. Then 6 months later, out of the blue, it comes on again. I waited for the miles count down, then did the same routine with my cheap OBD scanner and the waring cleared after 20+ miles. So for £20 for the scanner and full app, I've managed to clear the waring 3 times now.

I think the DEF system is so sensitive that something small can trigger a warning and it just needs a reset. If it then comes back in a day or so I would look into it, but I've had 6 months between mine or it was caused by a low DEF warning/refill that then set it off a few days later.

I hope this helps some of you.

Had the incorrect quality message come up on the dash on Monday morning, whilst travelling down from Leicestershire to Poole for a holiday in Jersey, message said about 540 miles before no engine restarts

My trusted OBD2 code reader, which I've had for a number of years, did not read the codes, nor clear them

Once settled in the hotel, I searched for this thread, as I remembered seeing it previously, after a quick read, a new code reader was purchased, and cleared the code, it then read about the dosing error, as stated in the opening post

After reading the possible causes, i decided that it would either be the old DEF (I don't do a lot of miles) or the dosing injector clogged, easiest to do in the hotel car park was the dosing injector, removed, rinsed with hot water, refitted

By this time, the mileage was down to around 360 miles

If anyone here knows Jersey (Channel Islands, not USA), it is pretty much impossible to go for a 'spirited drive' 🤣, so, about 5 miles at average 25 to 30mph, in 2nd gear (rare manual transmission) it was then

A short while later, the error message, and the Amber warning light disappeared

Happy days, and thank you to those who took the time to work this out, and post it on here

Hi Everyone

I have the "incorrect DEF" message. My friend is helping me drain the tank and check the injector next week after I saw a video on YouTube showing how to do it.

I filled the tank with approx. 10 litres of Adblue from Screwfix (Redex Adblue) a few months ago, had no issues, was the first time I'd ever had to fill it up as usually Jaguar did it as part of the service plan. The error appeared the day before it's MOT was due. My local garage removed 2 litres of so of Adblue from the tank and cleared the error.
However, it's back again!

My question is, what is the best ODB reader to use (assuming I do need to reset/clear the code myself). Any suggestions on what I need?

I have purchased genuine Jaguar Adblue this time round, as after speaking with an Adblue specialist I suspect the Adblue I got was old after maybe sitting on a shelf for several months.

Thanks in advance.

Fixed it :D

Firstly thanks to everyone who has contributed to this thread, without you I would not have dared to do this.

1) Bought £9.99 a "Torque Pro" OBD reader - Torque Pro Android OBD Bluetooth Fault Scanner/Diagnostic Code Reader : Amazon.co.uk: Automotive
2) Installed the free version of "Car Scanner ELM OBD2" from google play. Currently 5 Million downloads
3) Several faults showed so cleared them all. As others said, then got "Diesel Exhaust Fluid Dosing Malfunction". After a 15 mile drive this cleared.

For info I think the app is more important than the scanner. Initially I used "Torque Lite" by Ian Hawkins as this has 10 Million downloads and is mentioned on many sites. For me it didnt show any errors.
Also note that after clearing, I drove for several days about 5 miles each time, say a total of 30 miles and the Dosing error did not clear. It seems like it has to be a single 15 miles journey.
Had my XE for a year and this has happened 3 times. Each time it was when it had rained heavily so perhaps water spary from the road is getting into the sensor. Once the warning comes on, don't believe it will never go off by itself, no matter if you add more add blue.

Good luck everyone in clearing this annoying problem.

Just out of interest, did the error message change immediately to Dosing Malfunction or have people had to cycle the ignition/engine a few times? I plugged in my mucar CLD20 into the car's port and it showed the error P16A4 (it said it couldn't work out what that meant despite supposedly having a library of codes, but that is by-the-by).

I told the device to clear the error codes and it asked me if I wanted to clear the emissions related error messages, so I confirmed, with the ignition on and the engine off. The device said that the error code had been cleared, but the display on the car had not altered and still said that there was an error and no restarts after 460miles. Just wondering if my device is not actually clearing the codes and whether I need to try something else, or if others have found the same and it eventually changes.

Thanks in advance!

Clear the code, make sure it has definitely gone. You will need to go on a drive, it needs to initiate a 'drive cycle' which involves meeting certain parameters such as elapsed time and engine temperature on most vehicles.

Fingers crossed once you've done this it might update your message although I'm sure you know, unless it was a glitch, the problem will be coming back on if there is an underlying issue with the dosing, the scr or the NOx sensor.

Thanks - I'll give it a go tomorrow again and see what is what.
It has just been in for its service and they filled the adblue tank up. I had to brake very heavily to avoid some idiot overtaking on a blind corner and the message came on just after that - I'm hoping that the sensor just thought it was too full and I can reset it, but if it comes back I'll know I have to give it a bit more TLC...!

Hi all,
New to the forum and new to Jaguar. I have a 2017 xe diesel and for quite a while had the “incorrect” def error with the days countdown. Although I’m new to Jaguar, I’ve owned a bmw 328d for the last 5 years. Sometimes when the def was toning low on the bmw, I’d put some and it would take 15 miles or so for the message to go away. I thought that was the case with my xe so with 100 miles to go on the countdown, I filled up the def reservoir and started a 230miles drive. Got to my destination, parked and try to restart and the car won’t start again. I’m planning on calling Jaduar on Monday as they are closed today ( Christmas Day). Downloaded the above mentioned app but couldn’t get it to comunícate with the ecu. Anyways, I’m not sure if the non start could be solve without having the dealer reset the ecu. Will report back with updates.

From what I understand, after the countdown reaches zero, it has to go to the dealer to be reset

Hey guys, can somebody clarify this statement from Jaguar XE MY2016 user manual:
"DEF can be added to the reservoir by using the top-up procedure; however, a full system refill is still recommended at the earliest opportunity."

Probably they want to say that it's better to change fluid completely in other to prevent mixing (potentially) older fluid in the tank with the topped one? Is my understanding correct?

The manual lists average consumption as 1l per 500miles and a 16l capacity.
Just to mention that this applies to MY2017 and upwards. For MY2016 it's "approximately 1 litre for every 1000 miles ", according to manual, but not sure is this wrong assessment or something really changed in fluid consumption from MY2017.

Hi Stojan,
I have the same car like you. Don't fill tank with DEF. Leave it until message come on the screen saying DEF fluid low and add 4-5 L, never fill reservoir. Anyway, it is how I do and other forum members do and never had any problems. Here in UK, I and others use REDEX. Myself I buy from supermarket in 4L bin what run for about 2000 mls. How I do about 1000mls per month, I add 4L every 2 month approximately.

Thanks for advice, Dragos, will do that way!

Unfortunately, could not find REDEX fluid in Serbia (I assume this is the one at Amazon, just 10 l instead of 4 l). Are there any other AdBlue brands that are preferred for Jaguar more than others?

Don't worry too much, it's all the same. I've used the stuff from Aldi (Carlube brand) as well as Redex with no problems

Yes, that one I use, but I find over here in 4L can what is more convenient, not more cheap. But how Indianajons said, any will be ok probably. Just buy from a place where they sell a lot, because this stuff have a shelf live and also don't like sunlight, heat etc. You want this product to be fresh and not some what was siting on a shelf for last 4 yrs (you got the idea).
