Hi, I have a jag xe rsport awd auto. it has just broken down, AA call out mechanic thinks it's a complete engine failure, as the engine won't turn by hand something is stopping it, when try to do it by turning the engine on it just clunks. Would anyone know anything about this type of problem? Trying to get some information on what part of the engine it might be before I ring around garages to get quotes. AA man said it's going to cost thousands of not more as he thinks it will need a new engine, hoping he is wrong as car is out of warranty and I quite honestly don't know what to do. First time Jaguar owner &#x1f926-1f3fb-2642;. Would really appreciate any help, maybe someone can recommend a independent Jaguar specialist in Cornwall ?
Thanks

Now that is not a good start to a forum entrance!

Where is the car, has it been recovered to your home? If so, I'd start by getting a decent mobile mechanic to look at it. They should be able to diagnose the basic problem and once you know that, you can figure out your next move.

Don't know which engine you have but there have been a few diesels with camchain issues.

A "clunk" when trying to turn on the engine does not necessarily mean the engine is siezed. It could just be a problem with the starter motor - or even its solenoid. What happened when the engine failed? Were you travelling and it just died on you or did you only notice the problem when you tried to start it, presumably after a previous journey when all was well?
I know the AA man said the engine won't turn by hand, but how did he test this? I'm not clear how he got access to the crankshaft with a spanner to try and turn it, without a bit of prior dismantling.

Thanks for all of your reply's. Definitely not the way I wanted to introduce myself into the forum as I love the car! It's a 2.0 Diesel engine 180bhp the awd model. Car has been a dream untill now, no knocking or any faults at all. Luckily I was at work, started the car drove 20metres heard a bit of a clunk and the car stopped, when trying to restart it would jus clunk, all electricals seem to be fine, no warning lights or error messages. To my knowledge the aa checked the battery then tried to turn the crankshaft, couldn't see him remove anything apart from the engine cover.
Thanks for your help

Joshr - has this issue been resolved yet? Sudden failure of the engine to start or even turn over on the starter does seem a bit alarming.
I'm still not clear how the AA man was able to try to turn the engine over manually using a spanner on the crankshaft pulley nut, and thus declare the engine siezed. Access to that nut from the top, without taking out the radiator fans at least, is very restricted. Access from underneath might be easier, but you'd need to take off the undertray - which is held on by 20-odd bolts!
Another possibility that has come to mind is that one of the ancilliary devices driven by the serpentine belt (eg air conditioning pump, alternator) may have siezed and the serpentine belt is preventing the crankshaft from turning

It is a bit of a puzzle !
The fact that the engine stopped would suggest that something happened to prevent the normal diesel combustion cycle . There isn't much to stop a diesel as it basically just relies of fuel and air .
I'm not sure if you could get any movement of the crankshaft by just pulling on the drive belt due to the high compression of the engine . A petrol engine would be much easier to whip the plugs out to make it easier .
The clunking noise when trying to start the engine seems to suggest that the starter is functioning and trying to turn the engine over .
I'm wondering if the timing chain has broken and somehow jammed up the works ?

I have just had the same issue on my 2017 XE Jaguar R Sport AWD - it drove fine the day before then an engine knocking, then cut out, I luckily managed to get to my local garage but they confirmed catoptric engine failure and so has Jaguar. It has less than 38K miles on it. It is out of warranty. I've been shown a picture showing metal in part of the engine - I am trying to secure further information. Any suggestions or links to others with the same issue I would really appreciate

I also have a Jaguar XE R sport AWD 2.0 Diesel. Whilst pulling off head load noise from engine and loads of smoke came out the back pulled over as soon as I could. Since been recovered I had a mechanic look at take a look and have been told that the turbo has gone but there is also a noise in the engine and have been advise not to get fixed. Car is out of warranty on PCP with over £5k still outstanding and I’m not sure what to do. Machanic has said he can fix the turbo but there might be further issues in the engine he can’t resolve. Any advise welcome
