Definitely 2nd opinion when quoted so much money to repair and if they agree it’s the chain then straight onto Jaguar. If no joy with Jaguar I’d cut my losses and px it, as a reasonable chance you’d spend the 4.5k (or maybe less at independent) and it doesn’t resolve it. Getting all too common inaccurate diagnosis.

Thanks for the advice everyone.

I have spoken with jaguar customer services and am awaiting a decision from them on whether they will provide any assistance. The garage itself has offered a goodwill gesture of 40% at the moment given the age of the car but that unfortunately still leaves me with a quite significant bill.

Will update where I get to when I hear from them.

I would have thought that Jaguar would be interested in the cause of the problem as 50,000 miles isn't much for a timing chain and especially a diesel which

would be running at lower revs .

Just heard back from jaguar. No additional assistance given the age of the vehicle. A joke.

Unfortunately they’re between a rock and a hard place.... virtually bust so can’t afford to give money away, whilst knowing that issues like this will trash their reputation and put everyone apart from diehard Jag fans off buying another

Just a quikie before I start back to my job. It sounds like you have an injector problem and I suggest you put a bottle of a diesel engine cleaner through it. The noise is a diesel engine clatter and the start up is bad because of a partly clogged injector in my opinion.

Please do try this first and come back to confirm if it had any impact.
