2015 Jaguar xe whine from engine

Post by Rhadlon » Thu Feb 07, 2019 6:18 pm

Hi
I am new to this forum and am looking for some advice/help. Just swapped my lovely jaguar xf sportbrake for an XE, It is a 2015 2.0 ll 240 bhp petrol with the ford engine, which I believe is from the Mondeo. Had the car about 2 weeks an have a constant whine from the engine which is present in PNRS. it changes pitch with engine revs and can be heard on braking.
Went to Jaguar who said they would fit a modification which apparently stops "Howling". Now done but whine still there and have been told it is a "characteristic of the engine". I drove an exact same model for a test drive and no noise and have told them this.

Anyone got any ideas or experience of this?

No experience of the whine I'm afraid but I do know from experience that it's not a characteristic of the engine, my 240 is very quiet with no unusual noises.

The "Howling" they are talking about was an issue with early cars and was solved by adding sound insulation strips to the oil cooler support brackets I believe.
That was described by owners as a sort of owl "hooting" noise so definitely not a whine.
As it appears to be rev-dependent my first thought would be the turbo possibly having problems.

Or balancer shafts
Which was supposed to be the case with mine, however balance shafts replaced and howl/whine has returned
My noise is apparent at about 1200rpm if you take the revs up to about 1500, and on releasing throttle comes back at the 1200 rpm on way back down to idle.

I have the same whine on my 180d awd. 2016
Its low rpm upon releasing throttle 1500 to 1200rpm. Been to dealer and they said it was induction noise and standard. Mentioned oil cooler bracket and they said it wasn't applicable to my engine. I may take it back in again before the warranty runs out as I'm not convinced it's normal.
Normal driving you don't notice it but around town or in a traffic que it does tend to get on your nerves.

R Did you have to pay for the shafts job?. I had a whine early in ownership and they listened to the turbo with a stethescope and said it was that and replaced it. Initially the whine was still there but much less. Now it's almost gone completely.

I am glad I am not the only one with this problem. Honest John said its coming from the alternator, a/c pump or turbo. Could be because the turbo bearings not getting enough oil due to the turbo bearing oil feed and return pipes being partially blocked with carbon from switching the engine off without idling when the engine was too hot. This info came from the Jaguar Chief Engineer on the launch of the car.

I had quite a lot of noise from the engine in my car. This was significantly improved when I asked the dealer to replace the solid earth strap in the engine bay with a flexible version. There was a Jaguar bulletin regarding this and it was done FOC.

Search this forum for "FIX: XE sewing machine rattle in passenger cabin (TSB)".

It may not be related to your issue, but this may help reduce the general noise ingress.
