Yep, sounds like a heat shield.

Something you could try. Press on the exhaust (downwards or sideway) whilst somebody is revving the car, you may find a position the exhaust doesn't rattle as you are holding it away from the heat shield.

Thanks for all the advice! I took it to a Jag specialist in Liverpool (Side note: really nice guys and would highly recommend Jag Autos) and it was an exhaust bracket, it looks like a previous owner had done a poor repair and it had broken off so the guys there welded it all back up and its solved the problem for the time being..... might be a good excuse to start looking at aftermarket exhausts :lol:
