"Re-select gear to manoeuvre"

Post by landscape » Tue Aug 11, 2020 8:39 pm

Hi all,

Has anyone ever had this message? It flashed up today as I tried to pull away from a junction and the car put itself in neutral. I selected drive again but the engine revs increased and the car wouldn't move (presumably still in neutral). Changed to reverse, back to drive, and everything seemed okay. The journey was nearly over but it didn't happen again.

Google doesn't offer much (even with the US spelling "maneuver") - seems more of a Land Rover thing.

Thanks in advance.

Don't get this message in our XE. But in our F type if you open the door whilst in gear it will go into neutral and flash this message, forcing the gear to be re-selected whilst the door is open.

Yes I had it happen once and it never returned.
It happened coming up to a right turn when I started to accelerate and quickly changed my mind then tried to accelerate hard again. I think the gearbox just couldn’t keep up with my somewhat erratic requests!

Many thanks for your prompt replies, both.

I will test the door possibility, although I don't remember a warning about one being open.

I was also turning right and had a hesitant getaway, so a not dissimilar pattern. Hopefully a one off for me too, and not the limp-home mode that comes up in a search (albeit in the 2019 E-PACE manual).

Still noticing the change from first to second under light throttle though.

Mine had a harsh clunk of a gearchange between 1st and 2nd but my dealer reset the gearbox and it is now fine.

Thank you - again reassuring that there maybe isn't a major problem with mine! I know there is a 'driver adaptation' reset you can do yourself which I did try and whilst I think it made an improvement it didn't fix it. Presumably the dealer did something more involved - do you know what I'd need to ask them to do by any chance? I'm well out of warranty so would rather tell them to do something specific rather than have them pointlessly perform hours of diagnostics first...

I am afraid not but but they did it twice. The first time it was improved but the clunk was still there albeit a lot less harsh but the second time it was faultless. I got the impression they did it on the computer the second time as they said it was completely reset as new.
I find the dealer is very vague about what’s been done when I ask for details. I don’t know if there is a software update for the gearbox, someone on here may know.

Thanks again - very helpful! I know what you mean about them being vague.

I'm not really sure what they did first time round as the "adaptation reset" I've found (mainly on BMW forums) seems to be an all or nothing reset. At least for the BMWs there then seems to be a convoluted re-learning procedure needed involving driving at very specific speeds and throttle openings multiple times.

I asked an independent I had a service done at recently and he was reluctant to do anything with the gearbox - nervous he might make things worse! Might see if I can find a gearbox specialist given the warranty situation...
