XE-S 340 Gearbox - 8HP45 or 70?

Post by kayprmr » Wed Aug 12, 2020 3:30 pm

Hi folks,

I have done a quick search and can't seem to find my answer.

I'm told Jag fitted the ZF 8HP45 and 70 boxes to the XE, but not sure which of the two is fitted to the XE-S 340 (mine is an early 2WD July 2015). The two gearboxes have different torque limits: 450NM and 700NM respectively.

I don't want to assume I have the latter just because mine is the 340 S. The 340 and the 380 both produce peak torque of 450NM, so maybe it's not a coincidence that it's the limit of the 8HP45 box?

How would I be able to tell which gearbox I have?

Asking in case I consider a remap in future - I don't want to go over the recommended limit.

The only way to be sure is to get under the car and look. Towards the rear of the 'box, low down on the left, there will be a stamping. There's a 'box out of a '15 f-type on the auction site, and thats stamped 8HP70. Have a look at that one to ascertain stamping location.

Of course 8HP45 on all XE and XE-S, except project 8.
But 8HP70 fits on all F-type.
That is one of the difference between a sport sedan and a sport car...........

Interestingly, the only XEs that produce more than 450 Nm are the 25D Twin turbo (500 Nm). And the Project 8 (700 Nm). So I would assume that Jag would only have fitted the uprated box to those models as I would guess they would be more expensive.

Incidentally, there would no doubt be a safety factor built into the figures. So a box rated for say 500 Nm would probably be safe for an extra 10-20% maybe more.

8HP45 is rated for 500NM for diesels. 450NM for petrol. This is from ZF web site.
