My first DEF refill!

Post by Mr_M_cox » Wed Oct 28, 2020 12:30 pm

Hi All,

For the first time since owning the car my Xe r-sport 180 is saying it's low of DEF.

Having read around forums it seems like there are lots of scare stories of wrong types being used, crystallising on sensors etc.

Am I just seeing the negative and actually it super easy most of the time or is there genuine issues/risk with top up?

I am aware of the iso standards that the refill must meet. Is the own brand Halfords stuff ok to use? It does state ISO 22241, but not 22241-1.

And advice would be super helpful.

For me, just last week, it was a simple process. From memory, the car needed 11L of Adblue, so I bought a 10L pack from Halfrauds for £12.50 and put it in. The only issue I had was that the container comes with an adapter that you insert into the Adblue hole. I spilled some of the stuff, a small amount really, due to the fact that I was doing this for the first time. I won’t make the same mistakes next time. I would suggest that you have an old towel covering the area around the hole just to be safe. If you do spill any it is easy to clean up.

As someone also said, just make sure that you don’t buy any that has been standing around for a while - hence the trip to Halfrauds.

Thanks @jeff123. I did hear spillages can get messy quick!

Thanks again for the advise.

From memory I think they changed the dosing mileage sometime in 2016 so yours could be either 1000 miles per litre if it's the earlier model or 500 on the later one. Easy to tell, the updated model has the round dial between the speedo and rev counter and you can look at the menu which gives you the countdown mileage. No way to check on the earlier model. It just gives a dashboard warning when it needs filling.

Tank capacity on the 180D is 16 litres from memory, 9 or 10 on the 160D. As Jeff said. just buy 10 litres from Halfords, Screwfix,Toolstation etc. Always make sure you buy the adblue from a place that shifts their stock regularly as it has a 6 month shelf life and avoid garage forecourts where it is left out in the sun.

Put a rag round the filler in case of any spills, stick the nozzle well into the the filler tube, turn the plastic container upside down and pour the lot in. There is a slot down the side of the nozzle so the air can escape as you fill it and it's really easy to do. Never try and fill the tank up to the brim. It can cause problems with the sensors in the tank as some owners have discovered.

ISO 22241 Is split into 5 parts so dont worry about the -1.

It's no problem if you spill it, the residue seems to dry to a flaky particle consistency and it just hoovers up. It doesn't smell and it's not sticky. Much easier process than I initially imagined.

The thing that made mine spill was that fact that i expected the stuff to come out of the tube more quickly and I started squeezing the container. You need to be more patient than me.

Last question on this - as I have an earlier model XE without the display to see how full my DEF tank is am I better off just adding a small 3.5 liter top up, removing the risk of overfilling?

The message to say it's low has only been on for around 50-60 miles so I would like to think I have a decent amount left but I have no real idea at what level that message appears.

Thanks All.

My message came on with around 1800 miles to go. If I was you I would just contact any Jaguar dealer and ask them how much to put in. Mine was 10L but it’s not full now, I will just top up with this amount every time the warning comes on.

The tank on the 180D is 16 litres. The early cars did 1000 miles/litre. Not sure exaclty at what point the low warning is triggered but it's highly unlikly to be more than 2 litres left so that's 14 litres you are looking at to fill. I put 10 litres in mine each time the warning appeared and it was fine. Your choice but rather than faff about I would pour in the whole 10 litres.
