External hard drive

Post by scottishxe » Sat Apr 25, 2020 4:14 pm

Hi, I've got a 1tb SSD, over the past few months I've been burning my cd collection (around 2000 cd's) onto it so I can listen to them in my 2016 XE as it has no cd player. I've got 26GB of music on it so far & it's played everything with no issue. I ripped another 50 or so cd's last week but only half of them are showing on the car display & some tracks are missing from the recent cd's that are showing on the display. They are detected on the drive & play on my laptop, has anyone got any ideas why these files are not detected & played on the car? :?

I would think because of the size of the hard drive. I think there is a maximum size of external drive you can add.

Whilst not having any specific information on this, I would tend to agree that there might well be a limit on the size of additional data which the system can handle. Seeing that you have been successful with 26 Gb I would suggest that there may well be a limit of 32 Gb in place.

The MY16 manual doesn't really say much about types of media device whereas the My18 manual does:

I had a 128gig in mine some tracks were missing, ive put a 32gig in with the missing tracks and can see them to check if it was the format of tracks, obviously its not, when i get a chance i'll try a 64 to see if it can show more.

Notice the file system, previous poster showed that it wants a FAT32 system and if you formatted your drive on Windows 7 or later you are formatted to NTFS.

The limitation to a FAT32 file system is 2 TB (2,000 GB) so I assume you fall within range to reformat.

Caution, you will need to wipe the drive to format it and put your music back on it. Best to probably grab another (cheap) hard drive and begin by reformatting to FAT32 out of the box and copying your existing hard drives content over to it.

Always best to have these things in two places, anyways. You can use different types of software to synchronize the two with a third device (laptop/computer) so that doesn't become a hassle.

It’s also worth noting that an external HDD or SSDD requires a power supply within the USB interface, whereas a memory stick (flash drive) does not.
128gb flash drives are also very reliable.
