SatNav update problem.

Post by davidsharp159 » Wed Aug 28, 2019 5:49 pm

Have just tried to download an update for the XE. The first problem was that the size of the download is given as 28.8GB. I used a blank 32GB stick, but it was told that there was not enough memory! The reason for this I discovered was that the actual size of the download was 30,999,085,056 bytes. The USEABLE memory on the 32GB stick was 30,956,453,888 bytes. Although there may be a small variation between manufacturers, these figures are fairly standard.

To try to solve the problem I used a 64GB stick. No problem with downloading! However, when I came to install it in the car, the system gave me an error message saying that it could not read the format. The reason for this turned out to be that the normal format for a 32GB stick is FAT32 and this is what the Jag system uses. However, a 64 GB stick is formatted as exFAT which the Jag system doesn't recognise. To overcome this BEFORE you download the maps, right click on the stick and select 'FORMAT'. If it is not formatted to FAT32,and it most likely won't be, there may be an option to use change to FAT32, but mine only gave the option of exFAT or NTFS, neither of which the Jag recognises. I had to go to the following site to change it.

Good job my son has a better knowledge of computers than Jaguars.

Contacted customer care over this when I had the problem and to their credit they did contact me to discuss this, but I had already solved it by then.
But they are now aware of the problem and the solution.

Thanks for posting.
This has been mentioned across a few of the forums and like you I found the recommended 32Gb stick was too small
Even after formatting it was 28.6 Gb and the latest download is 28.8 or suchlike.
Apparently you can re-format a 64GB stick from Ex-FAT 32 to FAT 32 on a Mac but on Windows "computer says no"....
I used the same software to format a new 64Gb stick to FAT 32 and it works really easily and quickly and the car took the download without any issues.

I had a look at this site and couldn't believe the cost of the upgrade. Could buy a new sat nav for what they are asking. I think I will stay with the present version in the car and rely on my phone if necessary.

Presumably you are out of warranty?
