MY20: Foolproof method of getting Android Auto to consistently work?

This is for a MY20 S model.

My phone is a LG G6 and this is the original USB cable so should be OK, however getting Android Auto to start is proving intermittent at best.

What is particularly annoying is once it decides it doesn't want to connect on that journey I haven't found anything I can do to get it to connect e.g. move the USB cable to the other USB slot etc.

Does anyone have a foolproof method of ensuring Android Auto ALWAYS works e.g. let the car start up for a couple of minutes before connecting it or maybe always connect it BEFORE starting the car etc?

By the way I am also finding getting it to read a USB stick intermittent as well, but when I tested this with a couple of sticks: USB 2 vs 3 stick/few songs vs lots/song formats etc it decided to work perfectly so I'll test that again myself before I ask here about that one!
