Air conditioning not working !

Post by Geoffscat » Tue Apr 20, 2021 7:02 pm

As we have had a spell of fine weather I thought I would take my XE 2.0t out for a drive . I haven't managed to do much driving since I bought the car in June so I thought a trip to the seaside would be nice .
A trip to Hengistbury Head should be nice . We had a pleasant drive down . Nice and warm there with only a gentle breeze .
The return home wasn't that pleasant . Temperature outside 17c yet I was starting to cook . Air conditioning on ? Check! Better put it on full blast. Not much difference . My wife checked her side, slightly cooler but not much . I opened the rear windows to allow the car to cool a bit . My wife fiddled with the controls as I drove along. We came to the conclusion that there wasn't any difference between air conditioning on or the fan blowing .
When we got home I felt the air-conditioning pipes , warm both of them , the from radiator was hot . I took our 10 year old Kia Venga out to catch some fish and chips for a comparison . The air coming from the vents was cold ! When I returned I felt the pipes , one was cold whilst the other was warm .
I have read of people talking about leaks in the radiator but I'm wondering if this could be something different ?

You maybe just need the ac running in routine run via pathfinder if you have never used it before, it might not be that of course but thats the first thing that i would get checked, it is under warranty still after all i am assuming

Thanks for your reply .
I'm not sure what Pathfinder is?
I was a bit hot and bothered last night . I have been mulling it over in my head and it would seem that I might have had the problem back in February when I drove my brother out to collect his car on a frosty morning . The car was misting up badly, I switched on the air con but this didn't help. I know that it worked on our other car which surprised me a bit . The air con has worked in the past as I remember my right hand feeling cold whilst driving .
My car hasn't been used much, possibly less than 10 times 4 of which were back to the dealership .
I thought that the car came with a year's warranty , I will check that out .
I will also see if I can see any signs of stone impacts on the front radiator as I have read that some people have fitted a mesh in front to prevent this .
I may contact the salesman who sold us the car later . It's seems odd to me that I've had better treatment from the sales side than the service side .

I had this last summer - passenger side cooler than the driver's side but definitely no cooling. Trip to the dealer rectified it - needed a seal replaced under warranty. I was told that the system needs to be operated on a frequent basis to prevent this from happening. No problems since.

It is generally recommended that the air conditioning is operated for a minimum of 10 minutes a week, even if you're not using the car.

The stone through condenser rubbish was a myth. My AC was not working and a trip to the dealer fixed it FOC. The system had gone below working level refrigerant. When I asked about leaks they said none were found but top it up to max. Then a few weeks later it felt the same. I went back to the dealer and the pressure hadn't altered and still no sign of leaks. That was back in February. Yesterday I switched it on and it was cold enough to freeze chickens. In between I found the rear passenger vents were open so I assume that the cold blast I expected was less with them shut. In Feb I wanted to demist the windows and that is how I felt it wasn't working. All checking and topping up was done as goodwill. I bought the car 6 months old in 2015 and the car has been dealer serviced since. (except for an interim oil and filter change)

I don’t understand why people bother switching the aircon on and off at all.... just leave it in auto and it will maintain the desired temperature summer and winter using a combination of heating and cooling (thus protecting the seals all year round)

Thanks for the comments .
Does anyone know what spec the refrigerant is ? I'm contemplating getting a kit from Halfords to do it myself . I'm beginning to lose trust in the quality control of certain parts.
I was asked if I wanted the air con serviced when I booked my car in for it's service. I declined as I was reeling from being stung for £450 for a service when I hadn't used the car much. I didn't want to pay an extra £100 plus or so .
As I have said our other car has had 10 years service without any problems with the air con , my brother's Mondeo is 15 and still working, BIL had a Focus for over 10 without a problem .
As I had said above I will ask the salesman as I have lost faith in the service department .

That is exactly what I do, but I posted that for the benefit of Members who might not operate the airconditioning so frequently.

DO NOT use do it yourself recharge kits. The XE has the later refrigerant and it needs the correct equipment for repressurising it. The cost is around £140 ish. You may find someone will do it cheaper. Try the larger tyrefitters as a lot have now got the new systems in their garages. This is Kwik Fit warning,
Please note: If your vehicle uses the new R1234YF refrigerant air con gas, our free air con check service will only be available at selected centres fitted with specialist equipment. You will be shown a list of available centres during checkout.
