Integrated Dash Cam

Post by EwanJM » Thu Dec 10, 2020 8:34 pm

Took delivery of XE R-Sport last month and want to put a dash cam in. Don’t want wires trailing all over so what does everyone recommend or is there a dash cam on the market that integrates into the rear view mirror??

Any dashcam can be fitted quite discreetly, most put their cam to the left of the mirror and feed the wire down to the fuse box in passenger footwell (that's what I did). There's a few posts on here about it.

Take a look at OE Witness Dashcams at https://oewitness.com/

They supply a modified mirror housing that has the camera built in. For me it was such a neat installation and I opted for the additional rear view camera which is very discreet.
I fitted everything myself and have achieved an installation with no wires visible at all.

The only downside is that it does not have GPS, although it does have a parking mode.

I think you can buy a very similar set up through a well known online selling site where you have to wait for weeks for the items to ship from China, but for me to purchase from a company in the UK with a 2 year warranty was the preferred choice.

Good Morning.
Well, newbie to the group but looking for a nice neat dash cam for my e pace and saw the post for the OE Witness cam. Can you tell me, obviously you managed to install, do they literally hide behind the front mirror, the unit looks great and with a 2 year guarantee and currently 30% off :D I am thinking of purchasing. Oh and is it a struggle to get the rear camera ( if bought) wiring well hidden.
Thanks for any info.. Jay Dee

A replacement cover is supplied with the camera mounted in it, so it looks exactly as standard when fitted.
The install was a lot easier than I imagined it would be and the company were great with the support. I did have a slight complication with mine as they had a problem with a mismatch of connectors so for the rear camera I had to cut the plugs off, solder and sleeve the connection but was no big deal really but they gave me all the information I needed. They told me that they were manufacturing an adaptor so that future cameras would plug up ok.
As for hiding the cables, again no problem as long as you have a selection of trim tools available so that you can remove the trim without marking it. From the mirror, the cables tuck under the headlining ok but a tip is to put a couple of small cable ties around the cables as this will stop them dropping down over time. Rather than removing the A pillar trim, I pulled the door seal off and the cables could easily be routed down to the fuse box in the passenger footwell.
The rear camera cable was tucked up into the headlining similar to the front and I had no problem tucking it behind the c pillar trim. I did remove the front and rear door tread plates which simply pull off, to route the cable through.
Quality of the recordings from both cameras is very good. Unfortunately there is no GPS capability so there is no on screen display of speed or position coordinates but for me I was prepared to compromise on this in order to get an install which looked like a standard configuration.

For anyone wanting to fit a rear camera and not wanting to pull up the tread plates. there is a plastic trim piece above the carpet which runs from front to back. I lifted it outwards slightly and tucked the cable behind it. The only difficult bit is getting under the shaped plastic trim alongside the rear seat. Rather than lift it and possibly breaking the clips, I used a cable access kit similar to this: https://www.toolstation.com/draper-tool ... gJqQPD_BwE. Fished it under the trim and pulled the cable through in no time.

Or just get an old metal coat hanger, straighten it out and bend one end to make a hook :D

Ah yes if you are lucky enough to still have one. They were very handy. I used to keep one wrapped round the rear spring on an old Escort for the times when I locked myself out of it. Used to be a 10 second job to push it in between the door seal and the glass and pull up the locking button.
