Rattling or crackling noise from beneath the dashboard, maybe

Post by Xephil » Fri Feb 23, 2018 1:30 pm

Hi,

since it´s my first post, let me introduce myself shortly. I live in Berlin and just bought a XE 20d R-Sport MY2018 with just a some hundred miles from a dealer in Munich. A brilliant british car without all the perfectly working german Genauigkeit. Really like the car, really like that not everything is perfectly fitting and so on. But first of all I love the handling and that it´s british.

Well, this said, there must be something not-so-perfect; actually what I will be writing about is driving me nuts.

The cause is nothing less than a rattling or crackling noise from somewhere either in the inside or from the front bulkhead. While

- engine or interior of are cold
- engine at idle
- the AT is in mode "D" or "S" (not so in P, N, R)
- braking
- car stands still

it starts to rattle. It sounds kind of like a leaf in the ventilation but the noise won´t quit even if you turn off the ventilation.

After lifting the brake pedal and pushing the accelerator it stops as far as possible. When engine or inside of the car warms up it gets a lot better or quits almost.

If I apply the brake pedal a bit stronger while already braking (car stands still, engine idles e.g. at the traffic light) it might cease. Same will happen, after selecting Mode "N", "R" or "P".

I`m just guessing. It "feels" like vibrations causing a clip to clatter or two parts (platicparts) to rattle or wobble somehow.

I have already checked

- the hood/bonnet and all fixed parts
- the plastic covers and the engine cover
- the passenger side (LHD Model) A-Pillar
- the dashboard
- the centre speaker cover
- the ventilation outlets on the dashboard
- glove box
- probably almost everything

Since it is somehow depending on the Drive Mode ("D") I am not sure if it coud be gearbox related? Could it be caused by a valve or a fuel filter or anything like it?

Maybe someone else already experienced the same strange rattle.

It doesn´t really show the entire scope of the debacle :-)

Thx in advance.

If you listen to the YouTube Video the rattling sound starts at about 6 or 7 seconds after selecting "D". You have to listen carefully and turn up the volume a litte. It would be really great if someone had an idea (and post it here ;-) )

Just take it back to Jaguar, they will sort it.

Thx, I tried this twice. :| Will go there once more.

While searching I removed the center speaker cover, which indeed has a speaker underneath. Seems to be without function.

One more reason for another visit.

JTB00567 is a fault for creaking/ rattle from the bulkhead. It is a big job for such a small problem but doable under warranty. Take it back to the dealer and get them to look up this fix.

Thx very much. Do you know what actually causes the rattle? Just drives me crazy not to know.

Had a long trip today. Found out, that the noise can be provoked when driving without applying accelerator at e.g. 35-60 mph and steering spontanously to the right (LHD). Sounds like an old armchair. Nothing when steering to the left. Might fit to the idea of the chassis winding one way only.

Have also been to my dealer, he has ordered the parts for the JTB00567. Supposedly my chassis number doesn't fit.

I now hope, that this will fix it. Absolutely annoying.

Some have had dry mountings on rear shocks causing this. Regarding the parts for the creaking it is only a pad of foam with double sided adhesive. The work is quite a big job.

Noise is pretty sure from the front right side. Will have it checked anyways.

What about the engine bearing? Might this cause the described noise? Another option might be the stabiliser bar; some BMWs seem to have had this problem. Symptoms as with my XE.
