Piano black scratch removal/ polishing
Piano black scratch removal/ polishing
Hello everyone,
After cleaning the interior leather, plastics and carpeting of the XE last week, everything looked very nice, apart from the gloss black trim in the center console (after 60.000 km). It is very scratched. This gave me the idea of hand polishing it, to bring it back to (as much as possible) its original state. Before putting anything on the center console, I wanted to experiment first, so I experimented on the cup holder covers which are made of the same material and had the same amount of scratching on them (figured replacing the cup holder covers or just turning them around was a cheaper option for when anything went wrong).
I divided the covers into four halves and used three different products to remove as much scratches as possible.
The products I used on half of the circles are as following:
1) No product, original
2) Turtle Wax scratch remover (6 layers)
3) Regular silver polish (6 layers),
4) Radtech Ice Creme (6 layers)
The question to you is:
which of the numbers do you think looks best?
And do you know of any other product I can try? (I tried Meguires Plastx as well, but it faded the colour)
After polishing I will finish the trim off with some XPEL protection film so It won't scratch again.

No. 4 looks best to me.
This stuff https://carpro.uk.com/products/soft99-s ... e-wax-200g is what I occasionally use on my paintwork - it contains fillers which hide/mask swirl marks, should work great on the interior trim.

Agreed 4 looks best with 2 being a close second.
XE Portfolio now replaced by an XF R Sport and a Z4 garage queen!
Re: Piano black scratch removal/ polishing
Number 4 for me as well.
Corris Grey 180D R sport - loving it.
Re: Piano black scratch removal/ polishing
4 looks the best, but are you sure the cup holder covers are the same material? I'd have thought the covers would be polymethyl methacrylate, which would be too brittle for the panels in the car (they'd crack when the trim flexes) - so you may find the car trim softer and easier to polish.
Re: Piano black scratch removal/ polishing
Just finished using the Radtech ice creme on the middle console of the car. In total I did 12 layers for this effect. I must say that I am very content with the results. The close up picture shows the area which was damaged by scratches the most, and almost all of them are gone! (the little specks is dust). Let me know what you think. I taped everything off when applying the product, but some still slipped through... will remove have to remove it some time later.

Just read your comment. Actually don't know if it is the same material, luckily everything turned out great!PaulC wrote: ↑Thu Jan 10, 2019 12:40 pm4 looks the best, but are you sure the cup holder covers are the same material? Re: Piano black scratch removal/ polishing
Hi there, I don't know where you live, but if you go onto the site of Radtech, and then press find a retailer, you will get a map of retailers. or just use this link. https://www.radtech.com/dealers/
I used Arktis.de, since I live in the Netherlands, but then again I don't know where you live.
Greetings.

Hey buddy thats great information, thanks!
I live in the UK and unfortunately that company don't seem to have anything near so I'll try and see if they will ship from Germany. If anyone knows a similiar item thats attainable in the UK, please drop a message
