18" 8.5J width wheels on the front?

Post by landscape » Sat Aug 15, 2020 9:57 am

Hi all,

As we know, Jaguar offered some 18" wheels with staggered 8.5J width at the rear and 7.5J width at the front.

Does anyone know why? Will 8.5J fit at the front or are they too wide for the arches on full lock?

Thanks!

I believe all but a few of the eco option wheels are staggered. Most 18s and 19s are 7.5 front and 8.5 rear, the 20s are 8 front and 9 rear.

You can't fit an 18 x 8.5 rear wheel with standard offset to the front - there is plenty of room in the wheel envelope but the inner rim is far too close to the suspension and will foul:

18 x 7.5, standard offset

You might get away with a 19 x 8.5 standard rear wheel there as due to the larger diameter the rim will be further up the curved upright, but I haven't tried it. I have 19 x 8.5 on the front but being aftermarket wheels I selected a lower offset to move the wheel out from the suspension

Thanks Phil - this is incredibly helpful - much appreciated!

Funnily enough I have just been out having a look and took a similar photo (although yours is much clearer!):

I assume that Jaguar alloy wheels from an XF (which is actually what I'm referring to) would have the "standard" offset you mention i.e. would also be too wide, as there would be an extra inch of tyre where the suspension is now?

Ah I see, you might get away with it depending on offset.

The XE rear is 18" x 8.5J et55 and it just rubbed on the upright. An et of 50 might clear it but I don't know the exact figure, it also depends on the shape of the wheel as it was the corner of the wheel barrel that fouled rather than the lip. Depending on your views you could also use spacers to bring the wheel out, but I wouldn't fit anything other than bolt on hub-centric ones which would be 15mm at the least.

Adding that cost in would get close to an aftermarket wheel set though.

Don't forget if the wheel is 1" wider, that'll be half an inch each side. The correct ET is vital.

That's what the issue here is. Jaguar increased the offset on the wider XE rear by 12mm, shifting the whole one inch increase to the inside of the rim.

With the XF rims it looks like at least some of the 18 X 8.5s have an et of 49 which might work, you'd have to test fit to be sure though

If the OP has staggered alloys, why not test fit a rear to the front and see what the clearance is? As Phil says, an ET of 49 will give an extra clearance of 6mm. Also bear in mind the XF's had a slightly higher aspect ratio of 45.

I have 19” 8.5j on the front. ET45 and they fit fine.
9.5j on the back too - looks awesome!
