Apologies if this is posted elsewhere, but I can't seem to find it.

As per the title, I'm looking for a guide so I can assess if this is a job worth attempting myself. Just completed the same job on my 2009 MX5, but that's a much simpler car all round!

Nothing out of the ordinary with the fronts or the rears really, obviously the pistons need pushing back into the calipers to allow space for the new thicker pads. I used a generic piston rewind tool as it was easy and it fits, others have just pressed them back.

Parking brake - be careful. There's reports of it releasing itself when put into maintenance mode if the car electrics go to sleep after a set time. I just followed the procedure to park with handbrake off - press the handbrake button down and hold it while turning off the ignition.
Then, obviously, avoid 'line of fire' when fingers are in there.

Good morning,

With reference to the process highlighted to enter maintenance mode and turn the EPB off. Does this procedure only apply to manual models. I wish to replace all brakes on my R-Sport which is an automatic. I can't seem to find anything on YouTube without a workshop plug in device.

Thanks in advance

Regards

Al

Thanks for your reply & links
But it looks like I will have to pay a professional :(
May be its because of the key less ignition or the incontrol pro dash but as soon as the ignition times out after around 10 mins the handbrake comes back on .
I never get a maintenance mode message so that doesn't help.
Suspect it has to be plugged in & turned off through the software
You can love & hate these modern cars

I have an 09 MX5 and XE and I reckon if you can do the job on one you can do the job on the other!

You will get a message on the dash saying the brakes are in service mode when you successfully do so, however, and it took me a while before I hit on the right incantation. It also remained in that mode after the car had automatically powered down again, so give it another try.

The rear brakes are a doddle once it's in service mode.

Mine's an R-Sport Auto as well. Due to a couple of people reporting the maintenance mode switching itself off for this (and the wipers, too) causing issues, I didn't use it and had no trouble.
Hello Pete,

So, what is best approach, step by step, to service rear? Mine are still ok but want to be well informed for best practice when time come to change. Thank you
