I think the options I'm definitely looking at are:
parking camera / front rear sensors
front/rear heated screen
split rear seats
19'' Alloys - 20''s look nice too
black headliner
nice to have:
Pan roof
black pack
...
Many members complained about the standard seats so I would recommend the electrically adjusted with lumbar support
MY20 P250 R-Dynamic White / Mars Red - Meridian Surround - Tech pack
MY17 180d auto R-Sport Odyssey Red ICTP - 40/20/40 - 14X14 - BSM - RC - XHL

I have the 18way seats with lumbar support and memory pack, and have been in a few loan cars with the standard seats. I couldn't drive an XE for a long time without the adjustable seats.

Other than that, I wish I'd spec'd the ICTP system, rather than the standard one. Folding seats have been useful 2 or 3 times, and the upgraded alloys (19" stars) seem to be fairly rare on UK roads.

will the boot accept a full sized spare? ( so I can buy a spare alloy)
how easy are these cars to work on, e.g. are the filters easily accessible to do a service
It will but you will have to ditch the boot floor and lose a large chunk of bootspace.
A space saver is better as it sits under the floor.
An R-Sport will have different sized wheels/tyres front and rear so a spare full sized alloy isn't a great idea.
Oil filter sits on top of the engine and is easy to get at.
Pollen filter requires the glove box being removed so a bit of a pain.

The only option I wanted but never got was split rear fold seat. But now I’m glad I never got it cause now I can’t put crap in the car and head to the tip. Bonus 👍

Heated steering wheel probably a luxury but very nice when really cold
Heated seats with as much adjustment as possible
Folding rear seats

If you go for the R-Sport you will already benefit from the Xenon headlights and Cruise Control.

Essential options are Petrol engine, Touch Pro, Parking Pack (rear camera, front sensors) and Lumbar adjustment.

Recommended options (in order) are Cold Climate Pack (heated front screen, seats and steering wheel), Electric Seats, Split Rear Seat, Black Pack, 19" Wheels, Space Saver spare.

Take it or leave it options are Pan Roof, Mud Flaps, Alloy Pedals, HUD, Illuminated Tread Plates, Configurable Mood Lighting (nice for more areas illuminated rather than the colour options), Meridian Surround Sound.

I've noticed a couple cars listed on auto trader stating touch pro but only showing the 8'' screen - can you have this option with the smaller screen?

anyone who has the 250ps what's the exhaust tone like, any burbles/pops etc. on over run? I know in the 245bhp Octavia you get some 'pops' on down shifts and has a nice tone when you give it a boot (not cabin sound generated either) but it's quiet when cruising down the m'way.

No, if it's the smaller screen with physical buttons down the sides then it's the regular Touch. Touch Pro is the wider screen with no physical buttons.
