E10 petrol coming in a few months

Post by Angie K » Thu Jun 24, 2021 3:15 pm

The DVLA website says that Jaguars built from 1992 are ok to use E10 petrol.
Can't decide whether to carry on using E5 or putting in some sort of additive with E10, or just putting in E10 petrol!
What do other owners think?

I only use Super Unleaded wherever possible. Not sure how the changes impact that fuel?

Esso claim that their Supreme 99 octane fuel contains no ethanol at all (but then qualify this with the statement "except, due to technical supply reasons, in Devon, Cornwall, North Wales, North England and Scotland"). They also say that the "up to 5% ethanol" statement on the Supreme pump is there merely to comply with the law.
Shell V-Power is also 99 octane but their website is silent on its ethanol content.
BP Ultimate is only 97 octane and their website is also silent on its ethanol content.

No need to worry about it. Just fill up and enjoy the car.

I'm not fully against Ethanol as it's a great octane booster. However, it also has less energy per gram than petrol, so it actually hinders performance on cars that aren't tuned for the higher octane. Quite annoying really as you're paying the same money for less energy and performance.

Another issue I have with it is that it's not actually that CO2 efficient. It's a flawed method of reducing CO2 emissions.

E10 unleaded will still be 95 RON so the octane isn't boosted at the pumps. You wouldn't be able to tell the difference performance wise as the ECU will add more fuel to compensate as is mainly running in closed loop - the difference is so small it is easily within the tolerance of fuel pumps and injectors etc.

It's true about the potential reduction in mpg but again I doubt most people would notice it as it is so small.

Interesting video. There are a number of hurdles to overcome whether the future fuel of choice is electricity from solar or wind, green hydrogen from excess electricity or synthetic fuel.

So I had a quick look at the government website about the E10 fuel, and it has a warning that it is not suitable for diesel or electric vehicles...

The diesel warning I can understand, given that there is a sizeable business in sorting out misfuelling problems, but where would you even try and fit an E10 pump nozzle into an iPace, or even a Tesla? :D

Once my local Sainsburys switches to it, I'll keep an eye on it and see what happens...

2-4% according to this website. Which is quite significant considering the amount of effort that goes into gaining 2-4% during the engine design phase!
