Stop start

Post by Rob2005 » Sun Jun 18, 2017 8:44 pm

I test drive an r sport auto and noticed that when approaching traffic lights the following happened with stop start.....

Brake
Come to stop
Engine cuts out (good so far)
Engage electric parking brake
Remove foot from brake
Engine comes back to life while stationary

Am I missing something because surely it should stay stopped all the while your stationary? Not come back to life because I lifted my foot off of the foot brake

Nope it is governed by the foot break.
Something to do with the fact it needs to make sure you are in the car when enabled. Probably so you can't run yourself over if it re-engages.

Best thing to do is turn off stop start when you start the car. It is a waste of time IMO and just drains the battery.

Putting it in park will keep the engine off (which is probably what we are meant to do - but sitting at traffic lights that isn't what I do).

How bizarre I'd have thought the most effective way for it to work is with the parking brake. Is this a jag thing or common on stop start automatics

Depending on the brand I know of VWs that work the same as the Jag. A particular feature of auto boxes and start stop. I know the manual works differently as there is a clutch pedal.

When start stop does engage then the air con switches to a lower power mode and TBH most times in this hot weather the engine starts again soon anyway as the drain is too high.

My wife's Ford is the same as the Jag. I doubt the handbrake would be the safest way to do it.

Like many others, I find the Stop/Start a pointless and annoying distraction. I used to keep on switching it off. Eventually it stopped working altogether - bliss! The car is in for scheduled service on Friday - I've dliberately not told HA Fox about the "fault". I hope they don't notice, and don't fix it. Watch this space.............

Guys - if you put it in neutral then it will remain off when you release the foot brake, no need to go to park.
Suggest applying handbrake also.
If its in drive and you release the foot brake then it will restart, expecting that you want to pull away - regardless of the handbrake as this will release automatically.
