Mpg advice

Post by Andy123 » Wed Oct 17, 2018 6:54 pm

Hi all

I have a new jag xe 2litre petrol. So far I have done 400 miles in this but noticed my mpg is very low. I do a lot of local mileage and rarely though the motorway but I have been getting 17mpg. Is this normal?

I have even drove in eco and been driving very carefully.

My previous was a vw diesel which I know are better but any drivers here with the 200ps petrol model. What kind of figures are you getting?

I too do a lot of short journeys : Four miles into Driffield then four back.

I get a similar result, 17-20 mpg on the first journey, and then 30+ mpg on the return.

I assume that starting the car and warming the engine up is the cause of the poor mpg.
Same engine as you, 200 petrol.

I get about 27 in mixed mainly town driving, and about 40 mpg on M-way journeys. Mine's a 240 bhp Ford petrol engine, 19000m on the clock. Easily the best car I've ever had in 60 years of driving.

As it happens, I'm close to buying a new 250 bhp petrol Ingenium XE, which I'm given to understand might use slightly less fuel. I suspect your mpg will improve after a few hundred miles' use. As you do so many short journeys, a diesel is not suitable, in my view.

I hope your worries disappear soon - you have a lovely car.

it depends on traffic causing stop start all the time so hard to say - if i keep moving around town I'm into mid twenties, 40 on motorways if I keep under 80 -this is on a 250ps

Consumption from a cold start and short journeys can vary considerably.
When I used to do the school run of 3 miles in my previous one I was getting 9 mpg on the way there and about 15 on the way back.

Even with a diesel I only get around 31 mpg from a cold start on a short journey of 2.5 miles. On a longer run I will get over 60 mpg but the return on the short journey will only see around 42 ish. That's fine but diesels take longer to warm up and your petrol car when more "bedded in" will improve dramatically.

I do a lot of motorway driving and have the 163 Diesel with a manual gearbox (does make a difference), I think I average around the 70 mark but did have one journey coming in at over 90MPG (have a picture to prove it)

Short drives will never be good!

Overall I am getting 40 mpg and with an easy 46 mpg on longer runs (over 50 miles). Worst I have managed is 30 mpg driving quickly in Dynamic and "S" modes. Not bad from a 247 bhp petrol and much better than a VW 1.4 TSI I owned previously.
