I had an incident with a pot hole in my hired XES and lost a front tyre. The fitter mounted a Jag spec Dunlop on the rim with the dot in the correct place and the wheel needed no balance weights at all! Either excellent tolerancing all round, or lucky. I tend to use fitters that do the job properly and rarely need more than a few grams added at balancing.

If the red dots are on the inner sidewall, check to see that the tyre is not mounted with the outside wall inboard!

If dots are marked on new tyres, surely trained tyre fitters should know what they are for and fit the tyres correctly, not just slap them on in any old fashion. Shows a lack of care and professionalism in my eyes :(

I agree a good fitter will know how to mount the tyre. My fitter at Nat Tyres even has a device to protect the TPMS sensor.

Just for info. Yesterday I was in the dealers and was looking at the cars on show. I noticed that some had the red dot opposite the valve but the sports two seaters had it at a quarter way around the wheel. One car (XF) had 3 tyres with red dots and one without all Continentals.

I remember mine having white dots on delivery.
Just checked the photos I took and they are opposite the valve which is at odds with what's already been said.
I cleaned them off asap anyway.
