Rear brake discs - how long roughly

Post by maxfox44 » Mon Mar 11, 2019 8:35 am

Hi guys

I know it’s a bit of a piece of string, but how long should I expect rear brake discs to last? I read that the “hold” to prevent rollback can lead to premature wear.

Mine are at 1mm after 15k miles. So new discs every 17 months for me???

One mm thick??? Am I missing something here? I just measured mine - 8.5 mm, after 20100 miles. My car is also 2015.

I think the service department meant, 1mm left

1 mm on rear pads, strewth thats some heavy use over 17 months/15 K miles! Out of interest is yours a manual or automatic? If the latter then I would suspect the parking brake sees little use, ergo, less wear on the pads. Even still 1 mm does seem very low indeed. 22K miles on mine and 3 or 4 mm left on the pads.
Might be an idea to get them changed pdq and before the pad warning thickness sensor chips in and will then also need replacing.

Its not the parking brake that wears the rear pads (as it only applies/releases at 0mph road speed), its the torque vectoring.

I'm wondering if there could be a link in that case then to the OP's first issue with serious lack of front grip ?

If the torque vectoring is having to kick in all the time because of chassis issues elsewhere.

It's a manual and the car still has poor grip and handling.

Whats torque vectoring?

It's additional braking to try and minimise understeer (which you had/have).

65,000 miles and counting. I don't even think they are half worn according to the feedback at the last service.

That's really interesting. I'll post a picture of the health check sheet and the quote for £550 odd for the disc replacement.

As I was trying to say of the "front grip" thread, it is a horrible car to drive and I have no confidence when entering a corner.

I've just sent a website form into the dealer along the lines of "is it normal to replace brake discs annually?"
