Hi guys!
Here I will post the issues I have with my first Jaguar, and what I've done to fix these. Hopefully these will be useful for users with the same issues.
I got my 15 plate XE SE from a private dealer, was out of manufacturer warranty but under some odd warranty from the dealer which later I found to be useless (up to £300 per claim, doesn't cover much - no sensors covered and not much of the other bits). I was quite happy with the price, plus got it with fresh MOT and 12 months of warranty (later to find out that is useless).
I got it from Birmingham, I live in Suffolk, drove there with no problems. The following day (Friday), the amber EML came on and a few days later the ABS errors related to the water ingress H014. I've booked it in ASAP to garage close to where I work and left it there for the day. They checked the speed sensors, cleared the faults and say everything looked fine, the speed sensors were picking up the rotations and speed of the wheels fine.
OK, the light came back on after a few days, these guys could not find the problem so I went to a different garage. These checked it, gave me a list of the fault codes (below) and said they're going to contact me with a quote for repairing these faults (never got called back; I called once to remind them and they said they don't have the quote and they will call me back when they have it).
P20EE - SCR NOx Catalyst Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 1)
C00031 - Front left wheel speed sensor; faulty signal; intermittent
So I've emailed the detailed list of DTCs to a few local garages, went myself to a couple and I only found one garage willing to try to fix these, quoted me around £460 to change the NOx sensor (£360 the genuine part supplied by Jaguar - no other supplier available, plus labour) which in his opinion was faulty. In the meantime I jot the car booked in with Jaguar Ipswich to have it checked (about £160 to check it). Jaguar found that:
The AdBlue tank was overfilled and the AdBlue was of poor quality which triggered the EML - quoted £201.60 to drain the AdBlue, pressure test the unit and fill it back up with proper AdBlue
The front left speed sensor needed replacing - quoted about £409 just to replace that one sensor and drill a hole in the left front wheel hub
Done the AdBlue job with Jaguar Ipswich a few days ago and so far so good, the amber EML did not come on yet, I will let you know if it does.
For the ABS sensor, I'm looking to do it at the indie as I find it expensive with Jaguar, plus I have the workshop guide (thanks forum) and the genuine sensor is about £70 new. I only need the guide JLR-204-842 which I was looking to buy but I did not find it in UK. Do you know where can I find this, or anyone who can lend it?
I will keep you updated on the progress.

Sorry to hear of the problems you're experiencing with your XE.

I have found in the past that the warranties a lot of used car dealers offer are in fact pointless because, as you've just found, when something goes wrong it is very rarely covered by the warranty.

I don't own a Diesel but am surprised you could have poor quality AdBlue, I thought it was all the same from wherever it came from.

As regards the wheel sensor, I think Jaguar should have issued a recall for this, it's a known problem, but if it doesn't go wrong whilst under the new car warranty, owners are faced with a rather large bill later.

Mine is now 2 years old and hasn't gone wrong yet, but I don't know if that's a good thing or not. At least if it does go wrong now, its still covered, but won't be in another 8 months time.

Poor quality AdBlue is sadly readily available.
It smells awful!
I only buy the 10litre from Shell stations. It hardly smells at all and I've done 25k miles without any faults (fingers crossed now I've said that!).

EML can be caused by a number of things. Mine has been back under warranty 3 times, each time it was a different issue that was picked up by the mechanic or computer. Faulty sensor, turbo seal, and a faulty part of some sorts (can't remember now). The first 2 times the repair only lasted a matter of days. It can be very frustrating. At least mine was under warranty. I believe there is a topic on this forum somewhere, be aware of spending money on a NOX sensor if that doesn't cure your problem.

Thank you for your replies, guys. Oh well, the joy did not last long... Yesterday night the amber EML came back on and today I called Jaguar to complain about their service, I've been told to book it back in to have it checked, another £168. I was under the impression that Jaguar specialists are really experts and will do a thorough job, but so far I am very disappointed with Jaguar Ipswich because when I took the car there to get it checked I reported the warning lights (ABS, EML) and also a play/rattle in the exhaust occurring when I stop after a ride. The ride does not have to be long, 10-20 minutes and does not seem to be related to the driving style; might be related to the use of A/C (now testing). I showed the service adviser the first video below (the second one is recorded this morning). When the results came back from the service team they identified:
- The faulty ABS sensor on left front; replacing sensor - pending work
- The fault triggering the EML being the AdBlue tank overfilled; attempted fix did not cure the problem, they would like to charge me again to have another look.
- A nail in the rear right tyre; agreed to fix this, after which I got the TPM system fault in the dash. No advisory for the TPM fault, had to call them, agreed to have a look for free - concluded is caused by the ABS sensor . The validation of their statement is pending until I get the sensor changed, I will let you know if they were right about this one.
- The play/rattle I showed them in the video to be "by design". I understand that the bush/joint is designed to handle this play, but they could have identified what makes it play. In my opinion seems to be related to the exhaust system because the engine runs normal (my opinion). The rattle starts behind the front right wheel, possibly something to do with DPF, because it feels quite hot (too hot to touch it, I felt the air around it) and smells like hot.
(No one is revving the engine)

To sum up, since none of the issues were resolved and I already had the trouble codes from previous diagnostics, I feel that I paid all this money to get a puncture repaired. Plus, they "washed" the exterior of my car (poorly) last Friday when the AdBlue tank job was done and a bit of the paint came off about the size of a penny coin around the flap for the towing eye. I was so happy that my EML problem was fixed that I did not go back in to moan about this.
Please recommend me a competent mechanic, up 100 miles from Ipswich, if you know one. :) Thank you!

Good grief surely that exhaust shake and rattle cannot be right! If that's "by design" then I would be highly inclined to check there isn't a dung pile nearby smelling of BS. Is it any wonder you're getting these rattles and next the system will fall aprt due to metal fatigue. Take it to another dealer who knows what he's doing.

Or better still take it to an independent Jag specialist who employs proper engineers with diagnostic skills rather than 'technicians' who can only work to computer generated instructions

What a crap dealer report it to Jaguar in the correct part of this website first and if you get no luck there ring them. What a bloody disaster that is typical of VW in the North West, with my experiences with them.

Hi again and thank you for your replies! Over the last month, I have not done much about these issues; I've emailed Jaguar CRC to complain about the poor service I got and to question whether the hole drilling can be done as a safety recall. I got a call from them a couple of days later, the guys was really nice and apologetic, he said that we will probably sort the ABS problem out with some sort of discount but he will need to get in touch with the guys in Ipswich to find out what work was carried out. A few days later, I got a call back from CRC and I felt that the discourse changed when he found out that I have not had the car from new. He said that the technical bulletin is just a guide for Jaguar engineers to fix these issues, not a recall bulletin; he said that Jaguar Ipswich have identified some sub-standard works done to the vehicle and he cannot help me in any way. About the work carried out by their Ipswich partners, he said that EML can come on for various reasons and they cannot set the inspection charges for their partners (the £168 charge for looking a second time for a fix to the same problem). In short, no progress. In the meantime, as weather got warmer, the water in the wheel hub possibly evaporated and the ABS/AEB and all of that related errors are gone.
Anyway, found a local garage willing to do the ABS sensor replacement and drilling job (H014), I've shown them the Technical Bulletin. I had to look for the JLR-204-842 guide, found it on a website that only sells to the UK, only to registered businesses. Asked the nice garage guys to register and order the part, took a few days to validate their registered business status, ordered the part for around £50 with VAT and shipping included. They ship from Germany, but only sell to the UK...funny, right? The part was delivered, got the ABS sensor as well and now the car is booked in for next Tuesday.
However, a couple of days ago I was struck by the idea to stretch my had behind the wheel and take photos of the wheel hub, and guess what: both front wheels are drilled. But, the hole in nearside wheel hub looks like is not drilled properly, and I am not sure if is in the right place. The guide will tell. I am a bit concerned that drilling another hole next to it will lead to a big hole in the wheel hub, and my chances to find someone to fill the first hole are slim. I will keep you updated.

What I have left to sort out: EML and exhaust rattle, I will ask the guys to have a look at this and tell me what they think on Tuesday.
The exhaust rattle got worse, especially over the last week, I put my phone under the silencer and filmed this

It's clear what the bush/damper is making the noise, not sure why the exhaust vibrates like this (maybe I will find out Tuesday), but I am very confused about the purpose of these exhaust dampers. Does anyone know why are these installed? The dampers don't connect with the body of the car in any way, they are just attached to the silencer.
Sorry for the long post.

I think, from memory, it works a bit like a balance weight on a wheel and gives the silencer extra damping, whereas the balance weight on a wheel takes out vibration if that makes sense. Is it coming loose from the bolt in that video? It looks as if the bolt isn't tightened fully.

I see no point whatsoever in taking the car back to a dealer who gives the impression he has no clue what he is doing except of course how to rip you off! A quick Google search reveals there are quite a number of would be alternative dealers/indies in and around Ipswich. Give a few a call and look for reviews that might give you some confidence.

I see you have also posted this on another topic so perhaps we should deal with it in this thread.
I'll clear the other topic.
As far as I can see the exhaust shouldn't be rattling that much anyway.
Does the engine vibrate excessively on tickover as well?
That is normally an issue with vacuum to the mounts or the mounts themselves.

Thank you for all of your replies. The exhaust damper is clearly broken, took if off (https://ibb.co/YDcXPHF) cleaned it and glued it together, put it back on and things looked a lot better:

https://youtu.be/3X8rUdZJpIY
I ordered a new damper from a website called britcar; seems to be part number T2H24915 (not sure) as the image on this website look exactly like the exhaust damper installed. However, they advertise it for 2.0 petrol. I've spent time on this website over the last months looking for parts and today I've found out they are based in Ipswich (I googled the website intending to access it) and I can do collection from them.
There is still some vibration to the exhaust. It does not seem to be the engine mounts, issue described as TOPIX Reference SSM72758. I mean, my engine does not shake like the one here: https://www.xeforums.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=5675&hilit=vibration+noise&start=60#p90941
Here's a short video of my engine:

I find this full YouTube preview very annoying, and the does not work. Let me know if there is a way to insert these videos as link only

Hi again! I am back with good news.
I replaced the exhaust damper with a new part T2H24915. There is still some vibration, and I am still unsure if T2H24915 is the correct part for the exhaust damper fitted on 2.0d engines. But is the exact part that was fitted and broke down. The mechanic could not identify the source of vibration. I guess I will need to do the research myself.
The hole drilling guide arrived (JLR-204-842) and the nice garage guys drilled new holes in the wheel hub and fitted a new abs sensor. Paid £201 for drilling and replacing the sensor (sensor included) and that problem is sorted. BTW, I have the drilling guide JLR-204-842 for both LH and RH and I am looking to sell it but that will take a few months until I find the motivation to put it for sale. If you need it in the meantime, message me.
For the amber EML, P20EE SCR NOx Catalyst Efficiency Below Threshold Bank 1 the mechanic suggested the NOx sensor may be faulty. After some research, I found this to be C2D55027 which replaces C2D49888 and T4N4857 (also found online by the characters printed on the part itself: FPLA-5J299-CB, last two letters may be different). The shop fitted this last Thursday (a week ago) and I've done more that 1000 miles since and the problem did not reappear. Paid £139 for the NOx sensor apparently genuine one and £99 for fitting it. Hopefully I won't see that warning light again.
I guess (and I hope) my story ends here. I hope XE owners will find this thread useful.
