automatic box whines going up and down gears

Post by Domfow » Thu Apr 09, 2020 4:16 pm

Hi,
My model year 2020 180D R-Dynamic S after 9,000 miles is whining on acceleration through the gears on the automatic and also whines when the car is decelerating. Has anybody else experienced this on the latest cars, mine was new October 2019. No loss of performance or missing gears, just the whine from gear changing. :(

Could be the owl noise a few of us had with earlier cars - but I only had it on deceleration.
They changed the turbo on my 180d.

Not had it on the 25t.

I had the ‘owl’ noise sorted on my 2015 petrol model.

Was evident at around 1000 > 1500 rpm. All sorted under warranty.

Doing my weekly trip out to the supermarket this morning, in these interesting times. A late model F Type 180D was leaving the supermarket car park and as soon as he accelerated I heard the same whine as my car makes. Now both the XE and F Types have been around several years now, so can somebody explain, why the latest MY20 cars can still be suffering this whine, surely the engineers should have come up with a solution that is now built into the production vehicles. The 180D mated to the ZF8 gearbox is fitted to most of the Jaguar range, therefore to get it resolved would appear a priority?

Everyone seems to call it an Owl noise. An Owl noise to me is a Hoot. Surely it must be a howl noise. :?

The "Owl" noise was due to a bracket of the oil cooler and had a proper fix by JLR on early models.
It hasn't been mentioned for years on here so I doubt it's still an issue.

I’ve definitely got the owl noise on my 2015 car but don’t mind it. I will probably look into the fix as I know there is a TSB floating around for it. Loads of posts here about it.

Not sure it is the same thing tbh. The owl noise on mine can be heard just by revving the engine in park, as the Revs drop.

I will try and get a recording over the weekend for OP to compare with what they are hearing.

Also I swear I’ve heard an owl that wasn’t around before in the mornings since I got the car. Must be an owl mating call

Are you sure it is from the auto box though? Balance shaft bearings can make a whine and quite few engines were affected. :?:
