Serviced - oil changed?

Post by Borat1987 » Mon Jul 20, 2020 9:29 pm

Hi,

I had my Jaguar XF 2016 services today at my local (15 miles away dealer). It was the 40k mile service, and upon leaving and checking the paperwork i realised there isn’t a list if what was carried out (ie oil change, air filter, cabin filter etc that i would have expected). So when at home i checked the dip stick and the below is an image of the oil. I’m not expert but to me it doesn't look that clean as there was only a 15 mile drive. What do you think?

Dan

It takes a very short time for any residual oil to mix with the new oil. Also the oil is sucked out from the top so there is likely to be a little bit more left in than if the plug was removed. The only way to know for sure is to get a sample analysed.

Hard to tell, you'd never be able to mount a case with that alone. If they extracted the oil and failed to get it all out, you'd be surprised how quickly the fresh oil gets contaminated.

If you wanted to do some digging you could probably get at the oil filter with less than 5 minutes of work. I think the air filter is also due at 42k, again wouldn't take you long to have a look.

Diesels tend to get black oil and stay dark, even after an oil change. The OSH can list actions to taken at service, what does that say?

I asked Alexa How long does it take diesel oil to turn black? brought an answer of 20 to 50 miles.

This car was the first diesel that I have owned after having many as company cars and just assuming all was well after services. When you own the car it’s different, so following the first service I was expecting to see a nice gold colour oil on the dipstick to match the price of the stuff. Big disappointment, it was black as your hat. I asked the question on the forum at the time and was surprised to learn that diesel oil goes black almost immediately so no need to be concerned.

In my previous car, diesel X Type the oil went black very quickly even though I drained it completely.
As said earlier the OSH states service requirements but I'm pretty sure every service includes oil and filter change.

Did have two X Types, a 2.5L then a 2.2L Auto with the dreaded DPF. No more DPF's for me.

I have started servicing my car again. The novelty of paying £250 for a oil & filter change that costs me £50 has worn off. Keep receipts & a record & it still counts as full service history.

If it's a diesel, then from the experience of owning two X types from new previously, the oil is black pretty much immediately after having a service. I remember being surprised, after being used to seeing a colour change on servicing petrol engines.

As all the other replies, oil in diesels is black within a couple of miles.

A couple of years ago I did an oil change on one of my Defenders and after it had done only 10 miles or so I had to drop the sump to replace an oil pump bolt. I was shocked how dirty it was after so few miles.
