Recharge aircon yourself

Post by mrb » Tue Sep 15, 2020 8:11 pm

Has anybody recharged the aircon on the XE themselves?

Thinking of something like this

Thanks

To do the job properly, you need to vacuum the system out to remove any air or moisture and to ensure that you then put the correct mass of refrigerant back in. Those kits cost almost as much as a professional re-gas you don't do this, so aren't worth it, in my view.

I agree, AFAIK, aircon only needs re-gassing when there is an issue regarding the system not cooling sufficiently. I think that it's a fairly rare occurrence, so you will probably be left with a dusty/rusting kit for many years.

As mentioned, to do the job correctly you will need the correct machinery to extract old refrigerant and moisture and recharge to the correct pressure. I had mine done a few months back and it still works fine so no leaks.

As has been said before.
The manual advises that loss of refrigerant should be no more than 3% per year.
That should give quite a few years before performance drops off and a recharge needs doing.
If it's more than that then there is a leak and needs fixing properly.

I tried to top up my mercedes with a similar kit which resulted in me losing refrigerant as the pressure in the system was higher than the kit could output. Total waste of time and money in my view.

Thank you for all your comments. I am taking it to an aircon specialist. The aircon does work but seems to be working very hard all the time which stops the stop start working most of the time. If I turn off aircon stop start works always.

Day off today and had to look in. The stop start will be stopped from working with the aircon on in a mode that it is pumping out at a high rate. However if it is set to just a chill it will most likely keep working. It is meant to be inhibited when the aircon is on. If you have cold air from all vents it is working correctly. When some vents send out warm and others cold on the sync setting then pressure is getting down. Whilst others on here have had new condensers and seals I have had a recharge by the dealer and it has been fine since without any leaks apparent. That was over 2 months ago. DIY recharge kits are rubbish. After a very busy week working I am now chilling at home.

To clarify.
The stop start isn't necessrily inhibited when the aircon is working.
Many people run aircon all the time and have working stop start.
If the car is running a lot of systems such as on cold mornings (heated screens, defrost etc) then the drain will kill stop start in most cases to start with and until systems are switched off.
There's 90 pages on this very subject in "Faults and Technical".

People shouldn't worry about condensers on newer cars.
It seems there was a bad batch a few years ago and things have been very quiet on this issue since then.
Unless the dealer tells you it's a stone impact and we know all about that "excuse".
;)
Warm air from one set of vents and cold from another has also been fixed by surgery on the distribution flaps behind the dash and/or a software update.

Thanks for all your comments. The aircon is really loud and working overtime when it is on and the drivers vent is warmer than the passengers. Being looked at tomorrow.
