If any of you are buying secondhand non dealer or otherwise, tune in to BBC1 IPlayer and watch "Rip Off Britain" This is an eyeopener for secondhand cars. (Tuesday 7/5/19 edition)

IMO most criminal gangs are targeting vehicles to nick as a consequence of the insurance write off for sale nowadays. In the past if the vehicle was an insurance write off it went straight to the scrap yard and crushed. Nowadays insurance companies are selling them on for profit These criminals I believe are now buying these from auction and the nicked cars are being stripped to fit. Also selling stolen parts on all the online websites.

The other way this works is that the scummers buy the write off, steal a matching car and ring it (change it's identification).

Also, not many people are aware that you can have a write off inspected and have it's write off status removed from the MIDB.

Dodgy times, the insurance companies proving they are just as bad as we think they are. Again.

This programme is about repairing write offs with full photo evidence and repair evidence. It also shows the limitation of DVLA and the Insurance companies.

I heard that Insurance companies will accept repairs using second-hand parts from written off vehicles.
That in itself will drive the trade in second-hand parts.

That is true but the programme is not about secondhand parts. It is about write offs being sent for scrap and then being repaired and people buying them without getting the info on their V5 documents because the DVLA and insurance companies drag their feet. The first the new owner knows about it being a write off is when the new V5 arrives with warnings that the vehicle is a write off but they have paid full book price. It is companies that are big in supplying various car makes on their forecourts rather than one brand. Even those companies doing full HPI checks are being deceived as the info they have is so out of date. Many of these repaired cars are dangerous structurally. Checks and double checks are proving useless and those supplying their backing to the "Approved car" sales are denying all responsibility. The cars shown include filler in "A" pillars where they have been repaired. Watching the programme will show the problem.

There have always been, and there always will be - COWBOYS. In all walks of life, where there is a buck or two to be made.

Accident damaged vehicles are supposed to be classified by the amount of damage, but as said, often they get moved on too quickly for the authorities/paperwork to keep up. Caveat emptor as always.

One car was 8 years before found out. Has anyone actually watched the programme or just going by what is in the "know"?

There's a big difference between a write-off as being uneconomic to repair, and a write-off as being unsafe.
I believe these are different categories.
I used to work for Ford many years ago, and the attitude there was that id the chassis was deformed, it was NOT repairable.
That's however small.
On the other hand, it's quite possible for the cost of new panels from the manufacturer etc. to be more than the street value of the car.
That's an insurance write-off.
But quite safely repairable.

That was the point of the programme. Several were totally unsafe and the majority sold as undamaged at top price. This is one of those topics that really needs to watch the programme to understand what is going on.
