Good morning and happy bank holiday
Waited 38 years to reach my ‘Dream’ , a jaguar car but I’ve had quite a few cars along my journey to my JAG!
Past my test may 82 at 17 first time and my car history is as follows
1) first car a 1977 Ford Fiesta popular plus in beige
2) a white mini 850 s reg?
3) a red fiesta with a rather nice number plate TAP 900X
4) a Citroen Diane ( trendy at college thing)
5) Vauxhall nova
6) two Vauxhall corsa , one was a VEGAS special addition ( alloy wheels and a sunroof!)
7) a ford ka mk1
8) new shape Ka
9) From 2012 a Ford Fiesta ( brand new)
10) from 2014 a Ford Ecosport ( Brand new) the worst car I’ve ever had!
11) from 2017 a BMW 2 series coupe 50 mpg my a@#$, only 1.5 lt petrol much less mpg than the jag ( drank more than Oliver reed :o )
12) from July 2019 my20 XE R dynamic P250 the best car I’ve ever had! and due to lockdown very low mileage :D
13) ?? Unlucky for some! Stick with what I’ve got and enjoy!

Started in 1985 so a 34 year wait for me.

1976 Mini Clubman Est
1982 (bought 1986) Mk V Cortina 1.6L Est
1986 (bought 1990) Renault 21 RS 1.7
1990 (bought 1993) Renault 21 GTX 2.0
1996 (bought 2001) Renault Laguna Sport 1.8
2000 (bought 2004) Renault Laguna Sport 2.0
2002 (bought 2006) Accord 2.0 SE Exec – the worst car I ever bought only kept it for 51 weeks. It nearly killed us on a trip from Cornwall. I discovered many years later that there was probably a problem with the VTEC set up. It was also the car that made me realise that there really is a difference between supermarket petrol and the likes of Shell etc.
2003 (bought 2007) Renault Laguna 1.8 Expression
2008 (bought 2011) Mazda 6 2.0 TS – The best 6 I had. Went like the bullet train and cornered like one too.
2012 (bought 2015) Mazda 6 2.0 Venture – Had the Mazda ‘Eco’ engine fitted. Cornered like the bullet train but sadly went like a shunter.
2017 (bought 2019) Jaguar XE – Heaven and goes great too. 20% more fuel efficient then my last 6!

I haven't seen the man in the Jazz for several weeks but he has been replaced by an annoying woman who lives opposite me and insists on parking on the road right opposite my drive. She is 83. In the colder days just gone, she put it in reverse on her driveway (a miracle that day) and with the engine running still in reverse got out (it's automatic) and started cleaning off the frosty windows and chatting with her nextdoor neighbour. She also has the cunning knack of parking with the rear passenger wheel on the kerb edge but just the half of the tyre actually on the kerb. Another instance was someone, probably a child on a bike, scratched the door and she paid over £300 to have a few minor scratches removed whilst the bumpers front and rear have gouges out of them. Always has all the lamps on and aircon running. Not fit to use the public highway in my opinion. ( and other neighbours think the same)

My motoring history is a bit shorter than most people's here, it's been really interesting reading about the various cars and two wheelers you've all owned.

Here's my short history:

(2006-2012) 1998 *A small French car*

The deal with my parents was that they would buy the car and I'd buy the insurance, seeing as they both cost about the same! Highly unreliable but as a poor student with little auto knowledge that's probably because I failed to maintain it properly. I thought an MOT was the same as a service...

Highlights included an airbag light that never went off; dashboard lights that would just cut out and a fuel gauge that didn't move unless you whacked the dashboard; a core plug rusting through and dumping the coolant onto the road (followed by an immediate breakdown on a busy road); a wing mirror held on with duct tape; brakes that wouldn't hold the car on a hill; and the thing which killed it off, a rotted great selector mechanism.

(2017) 2000 VW Bora 2.0

I didn't drive between 2012 and 2017 as I moved to London and could rely on public transport. I got the Bora through my uncle for £500 with 120,000 miles on it. I had it less than half a year but it proved reliable in that time and allowed me to get my driving confidence back. The pads weren't wearing evenly though.

(2017-2018) 2008 Honda Civic Type S 1.8

Bought at 60,000 miles. A practical car for a 3 door because it had seats which folded up in the back to give more luggage space. Very smooth gearbox but the clutch was very heavy and beginning to slip. After getting knee aches sitting in London traffic I decided to switch to an auto. It also didn't like speed bumps so the suspension was probably quite worn too. Bone-shaking ride.

(2018-2019) 2015 BMW M235i 3.0

Bought at 8,000 miles. I enjoyed driving this car, it was quite light but with a massive amount of power from its turbocharged N55 I6 delivered via a fantastic gearbox, and quite efficient as well. The suspension was a bit firm and ultimately I decided to get something a bit more practical/sensible.

(2019- ) 2015 Jaguar XE S 3.0

Bought at 4,500 miles - a car with an interesting history. Ex JLR owned and one of the first S cars to come off the production line. Bit of a risk due to a patchy service history, and have had a couple of niggles (groaning from behind steering column, and a dodgy respray) both fixed at no cost. Relaxed yet engaging to drive, and much better specced than the BMW. No fake induction or exhaust noise either! The BMW sounded "farty" but the Jaguar has a more snarling noise.

Really excellent question! Particularly interesting to those of us who are non-UK residents on this forum as many of the car people have mentioned are ones I have only seen in pictures or episodes of Top Gear 🙂.
Here is my personal car history as a Canadian who started driving in 2001.
1. 1991 Ford LDT Crown Victoria - Basically your typical North American Boat with a 5 Litre V8 engine with loads of power, bench seating up front and a smooth highway ride. Great car.
2. 1997 Ford Probe SE - Fun little coupe with cool pop up headlights, a fun shifting 5 speed manual and my first car with a CD player and a (tiny) factory subwoofer. Great to drive but not super reliable.
3. 2009 Pontiac G8 - My first brand new car (sold as a Vauxhall in the UK I believe?). Mine was a beautiful bright blue and I still think the styling looks great. Handled really well for a big sedan! Also had plenty of punch with the V6 engine (missed the V8 though). Turned out that my wife didn’t like driving rear wheel drive cars in Canadian winters so eventually traded it in on...
4. 2012 Volvo S80 3.2l 2012 Premier - Picked this up in 2014 with only 14,000 km on it. Wasn’t nearly as much fun as the Pontiac to drive but made up for it with a beautiful interior, great seats and loads of tech. Particularly loved the automated cruise control on long drives. Eventually wanted something more fun which led to...
5. 2018 Jaguar XE 25t AWD in Black - This was a former service loaner at a local Jaguar Dealer. Loaded almost exactly how I wanted (power heated cooled seats, mid level Meridian Stereo, sunroof, keyless entry, remote start and 18 inch wheels). So far this has been a great car to drive. Fast, great handling and super comfortable on the commute to work. Really happy with it after 6 months. Just hope the reliability holds up.

36 years wait for me.

Orion 1.6i Ghia E Reg

The more observant of you will notice that this is my first none Ford Car!
My 2nd Orion Ghia was an E-reg. Gorgeous black one - I tinted the windows, lowered it and put on RS Turbo wheels. The first one I had was 1984 one in a light metallic green - it must have had almost every option fitted and was much better inside than the later one. A friend of mine has bought one recently for his 15 year old son to do up for his first car.
I loved my Orions Crieffy. Same straightline speed as an XR3i but with only half the price for the insurance!
2017 Dark Sapphire 180D. Cold climate pack, reverse camera, Meridian sound system and 10" touch pro. Oh and a fully functioning S/S. :o

Just a word of warning - there are a lot of these lists on various subjects which are very popular at the moment on forums and social media with the current lockdown. Some unscrupulous people are reading them and data harvesting for password and ID fraud.

Well pointed out Pete Mck.....following your warning I checked and "What was your first car ?" is one of the contact prompt questions on a couple of financial product accounts that I have.
And looking at my list I even missed off a couple of Escorts ( 1300 and 1600) I had in the 80's...can't imagine why I forgot them !
