MOT's Important information.

Post by Vespa » Fri Apr 24, 2020 2:05 pm

As many will be aware the MOT cars on or after the 30th March, has been automatically extended for 6 months from the date on the MOT. However this is not applied until 7 days before expiry. It needs checking as if it has not automatically been done 3 days before the DVSA will need notifying and it will be manually updated with an email confirmation from them. That is the onus is on you to make sure it has been extended automatically.

Some garages are open to do MOT's if you wish to have one done but if it fails and parts aren't available the car is off the road.

Does anyone know if after an MOT extension is the expiry date of the new MOT 12 months later or 12 months after the normal expiry?

So, for me, my expiry is June 2020. If I use the allowable extension and have the car MOT'd in October will the new expiry be June 2021 or October 2021?
I have not been able to find this mentioned anywhere.

My thinking was that as I change my car next year (assuming I still have a job) then it would be better to wait and sell the car with more MOT remaining.

Thanks for the info Vespa. My car is three years old on 26th of this month and I wasn't aware that I needed to check the MOT extension status, so you have saved me a lot of future hassle.

I would check it applies to cars not yet tested as it may not.

An MOT certificate lasts for 12 months. It doesn't matter if it was done late, the 12 months start from issue date.

Just in case anybody isn't aware, the extension period is being ended early and won't cover until March 2021.
Back to normal as of 1st August so get them done if you need to.

As far as I was aware the extension was only 6 months from the end of March until August any way and those running out in July would only be extended to August. I think that the Government website has been misunderstood by many.

Including Autocar and the news media then?
I only mentioned it in case anybody had seen the news yesterday.

I also see the Gov website was updated yesterday (29th June) to clarify about MOT's after the 1st August so there may well have been some confusion.
