New Motorway Speed Limits

Post by BevC » Sat Sep 12, 2020 6:36 pm

I remember the proposal to make motorways 80mph, so this seems somewhat unbelievable.

Typical nonsense. It'll cause congestion, increasing emissions anyway, just cars any restriction does to interrupt the natural flow. When we all have electric cars will the limit be raised? I doubt it! Will smart motorways enable the speed limit to be raised to 85 mph when appropriate? Nah! This is merely a preconceived position, justified by dodgy analysis again.

Not a great idea, but the two bits of M5 and M6 near me are normally too snarled up to get much past 60 anyway, so hopefully the results will show it is a waste of effort! :D

They have done the same thing on part of the M4 round Newport but it’s permanent and reduced to 50mph. Same thing on a dual carriageway between Cardiff and Pontypridd. All in aid of reducing pollution where the housing is close to the roads. I think in Wales it’s down to the Welsh government whose answer to the horrendous congestion on the M4 round Newport is not to build a new road south of the town, which anyone who sits in the daily jams would welcome, but to set up a think tank which came up with proposals like introducing charges for using the motorway section round Newport and to increase public transport. I’ll bet none of these thinkers have to use the road every day

It’s a waste of time and effort. People only slow down for the speed cameras in the areas I am familiar with where they have tried this before. It just creates more stop/start driving. They are only c4 mile stretches anyway.
