Re: Parking brake failure? mad story!

Coming up to 100,000 miles in my near faultless XE which I bought from new. The only thing I hate is the electric handbrake. Why? its slow to operate, lies on hill starts "you failed to press the clutch or brake fully, whatever" message on the dashboard! and the button is not in an ergonomic place. The most annoying thing beyond that is the misplacement on the eco/sport/snow controls which should be on the steering wheel where the controls for the stereo are.

It's not unlikely that my next car purchase will insist on a proper handbrake. My van has one and it gives me confidence.

Good luck in finding a new car that has a manual handbrake nowadays, I think they're nearly all electronic now, unless you want a Dacia of course

I've been tempted. Don't joke. Or I'll just get a van (I already have a van as a 2nd car to keep the Jag tidy).
I don't know any benefits for the driver from an electric handbrake.

If anyone knows of any benefits to the driver from having an electric handbrake please post.

It activates and de-activates automatically, what's not to like. OK so you can't do handbrake turns, but that's about all.

Exactly.
Presumably you have a manual car that's why you are having "issues" on hills?
No signature details so hard to tell.
An auto should self hold on hills when you release the footbrake for short stops anyway.

Yes I do have a manual gearbox. By choice.
I'd happily pay another hundred quid or two for a controllable handbrake.

For the handbrake turns someone mentioned, front wheel drive helps too. But that's not related to my point.

I've had 2 manual Audis with an electronic parking brake and never had any issues.
I've also driven a 7.5 ton truck where the handbrake packed up. Stopping on hills was a good test of clutch control to prevent roll-back.

Hill starts are about the only occasion you need a controllable handbrake, if you're having issues it may be down to your clutch control. Maybe you should get an auto ;)

Thanks for the insult. Please read my post Mon Feb 17, 2020 10:14 pm above.

My point is based on experience. Maybe the electric brake suits the auto-gearbox. For sure is the single worst feature on the manual. :|

Apologies, that was not meant as an insult, more a tongue-in-cheek comment ;)

Thanks. But seriously, are they ANY benefits from fitting an electric handbrake to a manual gearbox car?
