Map updates - any options?

Post by Jeff123 » Thu Jun 04, 2020 9:26 pm

Hi

Just trying to install the latest map updates and have left the computer downloading for c10 hours - and this is with 100mg broadband!! I have forgotten exactly what I did last time although it's only a few months ago, but this has set me thinking. The previous BMW used to do this actually in the car whilst driving and it just happened automatically. It used to take maybe 40 minutes(ish). This was a 2015 model. Surely a 2019 (supposedly upgraded) car must be more advanced.

Is this the only map updating alternative? Are there any shortcuts or workarounds that anyone has discovered?

This job is a complete ball-ache.

How far has the upload got?
It should be showing which part is being downloaded out of the total?
Maps are now around 33 GB and to download that to the car would probably take forever even if you hooked the car up to the house WiFi.
The problem is JLR download the whole map each time including countries like Russia which I doubt anybody here would take their car to.
The BMW's probably only update changes in UK maps which wouldn't take much data at all and could be done SOTA.

Up until the last update, it was taking the best part of 24 hours for my map updates to download, over a 200Mb cable link, then the most recent one took about half an hour :o

The basic problem seems to be that it automatically downloads the maps for the whole area - Europe and Russia, Australia and the Pacific, North America or wherever is appropriate. If there was an option to just download the countries you were actually planning to drive in, or even better just to download the updates, it would help no end :D

As for the over-the-air updates, I wonder if that is tied in to the fact that BMW are part owners of Here Maps, and JLR are customers?

Edit, I see PhilB agreed with me while I was typing that!

I assume that these updates are not the same as the early models and on Topix there have been several items regarding updates.
Whether these relate to sat nav I don't know. SSM74843 SOTA downloads, JLRAB0018 next gen software, SDD159.07_339 SDD software update 159.07 release note. These may all relate to diagnostics. Straight forward sat nav on mine was around 20 mins of which I did not allow Russia to download just UK and EU.

I have given up, I left it all night and the laptop keeps suspending the download etc..... I will look for the 20 minute update that Vespa refers to.

I don't think they relate to nav updates.
I think you are using the ICT updates onto the card which isn't the same system.

I assume as you have a My20 you have thr Pro which downloads onto a memory stick from the "Here" site ?
You will need a memory stick with 64GB capacity as the maps are now too big for the older 32GB stick which was recommended.
The 64GB stick has to be formatted to "FAT 32" to work with the car.
There is an existing thread on here about formatting sticks.

You are correct on both of those assumptions. I have the 64gb memory stick formatted to exFAT. I have the map downloader installed and I can see a range of maps to download. Everything seemed to be in place and I left the download overnight - c10 hours.

I have a MacBook and for some reason the download kept pausing, but after constantly starting it off again I managed to get to 15% complete. I just lost patience at that point.

I have actually contacted Jaguar Help this morning by e-mail, so I will see what they say.

I beleive exFAT is not the correct file system, it has to be FAT or FAT32.
Currently a Caesium Blue 30T Portfolio :D
Previously a Corris grey 25D R-sport.

My mistake, it is FAT 32.

The range of maps that appear may not be right for your vehicle and they are at cost.
When you are logged into the site click on "my account" and then when the boxes appear on the left hand side click on "downloads".
The latest map for your vehicle should be there and that is the one to download.
