I'm not sure the source of data for insurance companies, but I do question the accuracy. When I took out insurance with Jaguar for my RWD XE, the insurance company were adamant that the car was AWD. Eventually got it changed, so no long term problem. My point is mistakes do happen and it's good that you're questioning everything.
My insurance company reckoned my XE was a "zero doors edition" - luckily for me, they are wrong.
