I dont really disagree with much of what he said except that I feel the interior doesnt suffer in comparison to the A4, C class, or bimmer, I actually prefer it to any of them. Or at least I dont get into any of them and think "wow!" whereas I do when you switch on this.

To drive this car reminds me most of my 4.2 V8 XF from 2008, similar overall feel inside and to drive, though it handles better. If there was one thing I would change, it is that the rear wheel arches are too low so you cant get decent sized wheels in there to fill them out.

This.

I was going to go away from the XE and go for a new Mercedes CLA after sitting in one and seeing all the bells and whistles. Then I sat in the facelift with the touch pro duo screen, digital cockpit and actually thought it looked slicker in a more reserved way. It just seemed more integrated rather than add ons and lights everywhere.

I'm yet to see an interior in any of the German rivals that actually looks as neat as the jag interiors.

They all look like they have had 20 different design departments working on it at the same time. The swith team, air vent team, lights team, radio team, buttons team etc. Then at the end they have all just thrown a handful of parts at a dashboard and called it a day. They may all be great separately but when smattered all over the dashboards they look a total mess.

The Jag one on the other hand looks like a top down creation. The designer drew something and said to all the departments. "Make it look like this!" Which is a much nicer way of doing it 😀

The interior? I don't get the guy's comments. Coming from a 430i Gran Coupe, the leather is way better, the dashtop? OK it's faux leather but at least it's not the coarse grained plastic of the BMW. I believe you can get BMW's equivalent of the Jag dash top by spending an extra £500 and also, the sat nav screen doesn't stick up out of the dash like a tablet fitted as an after thought. The Jag's carpet is a better quality than the BMW as well.

One of my reasons for getting the XE was to get an interior specification which would require thousands on options in the BMW and, I believe the real BMW equivalent to the P300 is the 330i since they are both 4 pot, 2 litre turbos, not 6 cylinder, 3 litre. I priced out a 330i m-sport with equivalent spec to my P250 and it was over £5,000 more expensive. Therefore the P300 on test would have been roughly the same price as the 330i

MInd you, the BMW will absolutely cuff either version of XE on fuel consumption. :(

Wot 'e said...

If I'd have been worried about mpg, I'd have bought a diesel, not a 300ps petrol beastie :D

Mind you, the XE is very little thirstier than my last petrol motor - a 1998 CDX Vectra with less than half the horsepower. Ain't technology grand!

Well while we are niggling I actually not understand the comment that the engine in "not particularly characterful". If the reviewer means that it doesnt have any foibles, I'd agree with that - the engine does exactly what you want exactly when you want it to. I dont put my foot down in it like I would in the XKR and think "strewth, what's gonna happen next?". I think he means it is so linear with power delivery, and I think that's right and actually it is a good thing and anyway a lot of that is because Jag has finally matched the engine to the transmission perfectly.

But if he means the engine note, in dynamic the artificially enhanced engine note sounds really nice IMO.

From my limited experience with the P300 my impression is that it will rev the arse off the V6.
Probably due to the variable valve timing set up but it really does rev hard.
Not as much power/grunt and not as aggressive sounds-wise but a very good engine.
In my set up though due to all the sound deadening you don't really hear it that much.
