FIX: XE sewing machine rattle in passenger cabin (TSB)
Re: FIX: XE sewing machine rattle in passenger cabin (TSB)
So to resurrect this thread back from the dead.
My car died.
Driving 70 miles to work last night for a night shift. About 65 miles in the car starts showing - Vehicle charging system failure. I kept going but the car started running rough at anything more than quarter throttle.
Got into the car park - "gearbox failure, ABS failure, bla bla bla bla". Car conked out, luckily in a free space.
Opened the bonnet up after calling AA in the morning after my shift, turns out the cable had actually come out of the holder. Now I noticed that the new halfords earth cable is not crimped unlike the older, better quality ones. This one is shite - just pulls out with light pressure
AA guy shoved it back in, taped it around with electrical tape and the car starts, no failures! Anyway - now on a search for a new earth cable of better quality that wont pop out!

Amazing that an earth cable could have such an effect on the rest of the car. Good to know, thanks for the update.

Also true, but at the minute I dont have time to be going back and forth to my indy - its a good 30 mins away so Im going to go with a temporary solution. Ive heard the revised one doesnt make a difference in some cases anyway so it might just be a waste of time.

Re: FIX: XE sewing machine rattle in passenger cabin (TSB)
Initially I went for the "quick" fix option which did work.
Some time ago I had a prearranged visit to a main stealer so I asked them to order one in for me.
Fitting is a lot more time consuming but it in my case the revised version did work.

Hi all, just wanted to say how happy I am for the info some of you put up a few years ago in regards to the sewing machine noise. Mine’s a ‘15 XE-S and still under extended warranty. Took it to JLR and they said they couldn’t hear anything...Obviously due to COVID I couldn’t go out with them to highlight the noise but they just said it’s probably just the characteristics of the engine. Went to Halfords today and with I am grinning from ear to ear. I can finally hear the exhaust notes at lower revs. Feels like a different car. Thanks again!

Just be careful with the halfords fix. The part has been changed and the copper wires fall out of the ends. Make sure its either been crimped properly.cjgreen19 wrote: ↑Sat Feb 13, 2021 2:08 pmHi all, just wanted to say how happy I am for the info some of you put up a few years ago in regards to the sewing machine noise. Mine must have fallen off halfway through a drive - the car started saying battery charging failure and did not start. Shoved it back in the end as a temporary fix and it started again. Ended up buying a better alternative off ebay for £3

Yeah I saw that you’d had some trouble with the Halfords fix. I’ll go out tomorrow and just give the cable a once over to check the crimps are all tight. Thanksrayaans wrote: ↑Sat Feb 13, 2021 8:12 pmJust be careful with the halfords fix. The part has been changed and the copper wires fall out of the ends. Low and behold....the cable pulled straight out of the crimp! Have re-crimped it but will be making a trip to Jaguar as it’s still under warranty. If they aren’t able to fix the issue then I’ll be buying a better quality earthing cable as a more permanent fix. Thanks for the heads up, saved me being stranded on a future trip!rayaans wrote: ↑Sat Feb 13, 2021 8:12 pmJust be careful with the halfords fix. If you ever find yourself with a broken earth cable you might be able to use a jump lead as a temporary fix until you can get round to buying a new one!
