Exposed metalwork in boot.

Post by bramhall4 » Wed May 16, 2018 8:50 pm

2017 XE Portfolio, Black.
Am amazed to see bare metal framework in the boot, beneath the rear shelf. Are there any ideas on how to shroud this and make it look "finished".

Personally I wouldn’t bother, how many times do you see it.

The problem is, as you say, how to make it look finished enough to not be an obvious add on.

It's never bothered me. It's pretty dark in there. However if it did I would pop out to my local carpet shop, buy some cheap black carpet and a tube of EvostIc. Just cut it to shape and stick it on. Job done. :) :) :)

I've seen pictures of both bare aluminium and painted ones (2nd hand so not sure if this is original). Personally, I like the bare aluminium; no point in painting it inside the car.
Carpet idea is not a bad one if you really don't like it though.

Maybe it depends on where it was built? Mine is painted the same colour as the exterior of the car (it looks like anyway - it's dark in there and my paintwork is dark), just without the lacquer. Built in Solihull just before they moved to Castle Bromwich.

My wife's been on about this - suppose I'll have to let her out to sit up the front....

Well if you buy a bit of carpet, you won't have to. :D :D :D

Mine was Solihull too and that's painted. I always thought it was part of the main body which got sprayed or dipped or whatever they do at an early stage.

The main parts of the car are machine painted and the interior bits are hand finished. That may mean certain areas are left unpainted due to cost or time restriction on production???????????

Seems unlikely unless there is some overspray on this part because it would be hard to miss. I suspect that it is added after the body shell painting is complete. Perhaps the build sequence has changed or they used to paint this item separately.
