Advice on brake pads please

Post by billvega » Thu Jun 14, 2018 5:20 pm

Fellas, I'm a don at car cleaning but brakes and engine I'm clueless!

Car has done 19k and just had a 'brake pads worn' on dash, don't think it specifies front or rear?

Anyway on looking, there seems to be loads on the front but rear are very low.

1. Is it normal to have such a difference in wear between front and back pads? And is 19k low for replacement?
2. How do I know if discs need doing?
3. Should I get them done at Jag or can I get away with my local independent garage?

Normally it's the fronts that wear first, so I'm surprised that the rears are worn first on your's. However, I would get a quote from your dealer, but I would also check the price from an independent and then decide. I don't think brakes are covered by the warranty, so you can go independent if you wish.

For some strange reason the XE seems to wear out the rear pads before the fronts, most cars need the fronts done well in advance of the rears.

19k is not bad for a set of pads, I had a BMW that needed pads and disks every 15K.

Best way to work out if disks are needed is to measure the disk thickness and see if it is within the acceptable range. There are other factors that may dictate disk replacement, grooves etc but the garage will advise on that.

Thanks, do you know the minimum thickness of the discs?

19k is terrible!! My last car a VW golf was still in the original discs and pads when I handed it back with 104k miles on the clock after 4 years. My XE is on 54,000 miles and the brakes are hardly worn. The pads look like they have loads of material left and not a hint of a ridge on the discs front and rear.

I have a friend who has an XF and he has been through 2 sets of rear pads and 1 set of discs in 35k miles. I wonder if it is to do with the torque vectoring by braking? He admittedly accelerates quite hard out of junctions and roundabouts etc.

Recent Jaguars do wear the rear pads more than the front. If you add in spirited driving and plenty of hard braking then 20K before changing is really quite good. Lots of owners get well less than that. It's all a question of how you drive.

I haven't had to change pads on the XE and the VW (19000 miles) but the Rover V6 lasted 32000 miles with lots of motorway and fast A roads.

Got a quote from my local Jag dealer. £252 supply and fit rear pads.

He said the rears wear first on the XE's, usualy wear twice as fast as the fronts.

Silly money? Seems to be

I have just had a quick look at a couple of websites selling brake pads and the rears are the dearest at £79 and £99 a set. That makes the Jag dealer expensive BUT you are getting Jag parts with warranty and fitted correctly with any resetting of any computers if required.

The rears are used with the stability control so thats why they wear more quickly. I had mine on the previous XF replaced at Halfords for a lot less than the authorised dealer -
