"They shall not grow old" - Film

Post by PhilB » Sat Nov 10, 2018 7:47 am

Sir Peter Jackson, director of the "Lord of the Rings" series etc has produced a new film to mark the centenary of the end of WW1.
They have taken stock footage, slowed it down, added sound and colourisation using computers and the result is pretty amazing.
They have also added commentary from veterans recorded by the BBC in the 1960's.

It's being shown on BBC2 tomorrow (Sunday) at 2130.
Some might find it interesting and even if you aren't into the history, seeing WW1 in what looks like modern footage is pretty spooky.

Trailer on You Tube:

There's a couple of vids on you tube talking to him about how they made it.
To add sound they employed professional forensic lip readers and also identified the regiments from insignia and used actors with the right accents.
The attention to detail is pretty astounding.
I'm not sure if you are aware but he has a collection of working WW1 aircraft and also a company (Wingnut Wings) making large scale plastic models of WW1 aircraft.

Already marked up to watch. Now this is a spooky tale from this morning. I have this years dated small poppy on my jacket and when I looked in the hall mirror this morning it was out of position with the leaves not at 11. So looking in the mirror I adjusted it (inverted image) and it sprang back to the original position before trying to adjust it. So I had 3 more attempts to adjust it using the mirror and undoing the clip. Each time it sprang back to the original position. So I decided to take my coat off to adjust it and it was actually correct at the 11 o'clock position. The mirror image showed it as 1 o'clock.

I watched this film last night and it certainly brought home the appalling conditions in the trenches. What was surprising was the insight into the mental attitude of many of the men who were there and survived.

I too watched it, and i agree with your posting of how the mental attitude was so strong in the beliefs and commitments, and seemed to accept the ' i may be next' attitude.

Very well put together and didn't pull any punches.
