Sticky auto box rotary selector

Post by Prestige » Tue Dec 11, 2018 3:23 pm

I am getting an occasional problem when coming to a stop in D getting the rotary knob to turn to another setting. It doesn't seem to want to change to reverse or park etc. 3 or 4 tries or a switch off is the only way to get it to change setting when it happens.
Dealer will check it out but not until January.
Anyone else had this ? Am I missing doing something ?

Not one I've heard on here before.
One of the things that comes to mind is some sort of fault with regards to the brakes being applied and notifying the controller it can allow a change.
Could be a few possibilities though probably software related as usual.

Strangely enough I have suffered exactly the same thing a few times - almost panicked as I was in traffic each time it happened. Will have to get mine checked out at the retailer as well if it carries on.

I hate to say it, but I had the same issue on my 66 plate last year and my selector completely failed after a few days of it being "sticky" and having the same issues as you are experiencing. I'd recommend keeping one of those Sat Nav holder "sucker" things in the car as that's what I had to use in order to pull the selector up and select Drive to get to the garage. The AA person who came to rescue me also used a cable tie to prevent it falling back into the dash again so I could easily select Reverse and Park on the way there.

Thanks spritely and georage....interesting to hear that others are suffering/have suffered the same problems. Will report back here when the dealer has checked it out.
PhilB.....it would seem therefore not an isolated fault.

I thought if the rising mechanism failed, you could rotate an select gear with it in the low position?

It would only go to N and then stop in the lowered position.

I have found out today, that gear selector has a module which can be updated, which mine has had, in an effort to thwart the changing mode of its own accord symptom.

Obviously not as we now have two posts on it but then I never said it was.
My comment as below.

Had my first service ( £599 five year service plan) today....very good dealership experience,XF loan car very good. Asked for the "sticky" auto box rotary selector to be looked at....report says no fault code found but a software update was available and was done.
Only done 20 miles home but the rotary selector seems much less notchy and much smoother.

So....a software update seems to have fixed it !
