2017 XE35t What is this rubber thing on each muffler?

Post by dcpwi » Wed Apr 17, 2019 3:48 am

I purchased the car about a week ago and of course I have to see how things are put together. I noticed in the back of each rear muffler there is this odd appendage that I can't figure out what it does. It looks like a rubber bushing with a bolt through it. But its doesn't seen to hold anything up.
Does anyone know what these are for? Attached pic.

It's difficult to make out exactly where this is on the car, but it looks like something was fitted to the bush arrangement. I'm guessing, but could it be an anti-roll-bar attachment?

I added a couple more shots. It's a bracket on the back of the muffler with a cup holding a hollow rubber cylinder held to the bracket by a bolt. It just hangs out in the air off the muffler. There is one on the left and on the right muffler.

I can only suggest it's .some sort of anti-vibration counterbalance device. Other than that, no idea.

Complete guess here, but could it be a tensioner for a partial bypass valve? Actually, scrub that, I've just been out and had a look under the car. It's a vibration damper.

That's what I thought it might be or some sort of tone enhancer.

Thanks

Sound deadening perhaps????? as the rubber does not actually touch anything by the looks of it.

It's designed to ring at a certain excitation frequency to either reduce or increase a particular frequency in the exhaust system. If you give it a light twang with your finger, it rings. In a damped rubbery kind of way.

As others have said Its a damper. Probably to stop ringing or noise produced by the silencer.
