What happens at the end of the 3 year warranty?

Post by FairlyOldGit » Wed Sep 11, 2019 9:22 pm

My car (new in Oct 2016) goes in tomorrow for final warranty work, service, and MOT.

I have already had a quote of something like £610/year for an extended warranty - seems a bit steep -
are Jaguar expecting a high number of claims?

I also noted that the Jaguar assistance membership is only available with the warranty - that is a shame
since I would have taken that up (on its own) since the annual fee seemed quite reasonable.

What else do you lose at the end of the warranty period? Jaguar Remote, Map updates?

When mine ran out, as the car has been virtually faultless apart from a new condenser, I decided to get national breakdown cover with Start Rescue. They probably wouldn't be able to fix it, but at least I could get the car home and into my local garage. That was £60 and covers my son's Audi too.

It will go wrong at some point I'm sure but that's a chance you take and I will have saved at least £600 a year by not worrying about extended warranty.

My warranty expired in June. Slightly surprised I didn't get a call/email from the dealer trying to sell me an extended warranty... Currently running without one

For Jaguar Remote, I received an email to renew from Jaguar a few weeks befire it expired. Cost was £30 for the year and all existing features work as before. If you have the tracker I believe it's an additional cost.

Aside: I'm a member of Boundless, the old CSMA (Civil Service Motoring Association) as was. They offer a 'Car Care Plan' with a 10% discount. Cost to me was in the order of £220. Interestingly the terms and conditions documents are identical to the Jaguar extended warranty, turns out both are administered by Motors Insurance Company Limited (MICL) .

I took on the extended warranty for the one year and never used it. I have now added full RAC cover to my insurance for (I think without checking) £60/£80 or so. That is everything that the JLR rescue covered. I also set up a savings account to pay for repairs etc. So far I have used £230 for a new battery and fitting by the dealer and a full set of tyres. I stick extras in plus £200 per month and have amassed just short of £10,000. This is inc premium bond winnings also. It soon built up. The extended warranty has many clauses of not covered items. Personally if you have had everything done and the car is OK stick the £700 away in a savings account and add to it each month.

Having always serviced my other cars I’m going to DIY my car with 61000 miles covered. I’ve already got cheap National Breakdown cover in place. Kwik Fit are going to do the oil change @ £72 as the car is so low to the ground and also Castrol works out at £70 - they use Fuchs to the JLR spec. I’ve got the pollen filter coming from ebay @ £8. Nice post from Vespa about how to drain the water trap on the fuel filter. To hell with the on line service history, I have downloaded the service schedule and will make notes on it and keep it with the car. I can’t be doing with my local dealer any more.
