Map Update Pro with USB and an Apple Mac experience

Post by The Motor2 » Sat Jan 04, 2020 3:28 pm

Tried updating in November and on into December as there was a glitch trying to the HERE system to recognise my car. Georgia Wittle at customer services took ownership of the problem and sorted that out. Then when I tried to download the Map Downloader (What's that about - overcomplicated) it would not work as I use an Apple iMac and it runs 64bit software and the downloader is 32bit. So back to customer services and eventually get told that HERE are aware and are 'working on it'.

So finally yesterday I discovered a file for downloading it and it ran ok. (MapDownloader_installer_mac_offline_1_3_1.dmg)

So ran it and it took about 3 hours to download the new maps file which is 32GB and has over 760 zip files in it.

To install it I have to start the engine, insert the USB and leave the engine run as long as it takes to install. I noticed there are a number of speech recognition files on there for French, Italian Russian etc

So does anyone know if the system just pics up the map files that are in English and how long I might have to run the engine for to complete it?

You need to use a USB 3.0 to ensure that the transfer is as fast as possible. Mine takes only a few minutes although I think that the European map set is much larger that what we have for Australia/New Zealand.

A fast USB stick loads the maps to the car in around 15 minutes. Slower sticks could take a lot longer.

Make sure you start the car and let it get fully up and running/connected etc before you put the USB stick in.
I find it works much better.
I also take the car for a drive whilst it's doing its thing - much better than sitting stationary whilst it updates.

I use a MacBook Pro to download the maps from the website but using a boot camp windows partition, not had an issue using this method.

Final update :)

Map downloaded onto the car as suggested in about 20 minutes.

Then opened In Control Route planner on the computer, organised the route I wanted and when I was happy, saved it and it replied - synching. Started the car and there was my route up and ready to go.
