The trouble is that we don't know what technology Jaguar have employed, if any, to combat such things as main bearing wear etc.

The Castrol oil wiil cling to bearings longer rather than drain away quickly even when hot so little wear will take place. also JLR have reduced many white metal bearings in the engine for roller bearings. https://www.jaguar.co.uk/about-jaguar/ingenium-engine.htm

Not sure how you draw that conclusion, Vespa, the majority subject to heavy load/wear still look like white metal to me. Interesting to see the timing chains and tensioners described as "maintenance free" though, bearing in mind the recently reported instances of stretched chains requiring replacement

If you read about the engines there are still white metal bearings of course but the engine has been designed to cope with S/S using the developed oils by Castrol.

My XE is now 9 months old and about a month ago something Strange started. So for the last month or so, maybe once a week (so very few times so far) I get a beep and a message on the dash saying "stop start fault" and a yellow triangle with an exclamation mark. This happens randomly mid journey and the next time I start the car it's gone until a few days or a week or so later. Funny thing is though the stop start works fine, even when the message appears. The car is driven daily and has about 6000 miles on the clock. I also have some issues with the ICT pro but I don't think they are related, I'll post in another thread related to ICT pro for that.

Well Cat went in for a day at dealers, They carried out a SDD health check, tested battery required a charge, retested and supposed to be ok, updated CCF and cleared fault codes, and it is supposed to be working again, 9 journeys later, 15 -50 miles per journey, and it hasn't worked once, so its actually gone backwards on the occasional working to not at all, another phone call I think!

Repairman.
That is exactly what they were doing with me when I took my car back - eventually 4th visit / 18 months) they replaced battery which from reading other posts seems to cure problem.

My S/S has stopped working again but I have made another observation. On ignition/start up I have been getting a ping from the warning system regarding outside temp and the snowflake symbol is showing. I am sure that this is the activation temp that stops S/S from working. Until the temp gets over the magical 5c that seems to be the trigger point for the snowflake indication I reckon it will come back into action. Sadly that will not happen yet for a few days. If and when it does I will see if the S/S commences again. The manual states below 0c but it may be actually higher.

Sorry to disappoint you Vespa, but I've been on the road before 7am every morning this week with my temp reading between -1 to 2c and my S/S works after a few miles, by the time I reach Leeds after 43 miles in ECO mode and all systems working, S/S comes on at any junction. As my car does 86 miles a day minimum the battery is always fully charged and I think that's the basic cause of everybody's issues with S/S. Short town journey's just don't keep the battery at a level for S/S to constantly work. As I am on the motorway, in 6th literally cruising at 70mph at 1500 rpm, nothing is been stressed, everything is working at the norm, when I come to an off road junction, S/S automatically works.

Yes, I agree with that but just want to see if any temp difference on a slight reduction in battery competence makes it more prone to not working. My reasoning was that on Sunday I went out to a shop and the S/S worked everytime. On the way back the cold front had moved in quickly and it failed to operate on the return journey with a temp reduction to light up the snowflake on the display. I have also been looking into other makes and all short journey drivers are having S/S problems ie BMW, Audi, Mini, Chrysler, Renault etc. So just for now I am looking into the temp theory being more sensitive on underused cars. I may be totally wrong but we will see.

Down here in Dorset most of my journey's have been 7 degrees and above, we have got away with weather so far, apart from some windy nights.
So not sure temperature related in my case
its the randomness of it I don't understand, we did a 15 mile journey on Monday, and it worked once at about 7 miles, and didn't work again, nor on return journey, 10 miles of trip is 60mph limit so its not pottering about either.
I have also noticed in vehicle information last message screen a message saying "Volumetric Sensor" what ever that is, I would have thought that should have been cleared when dealer cleared fault codes, I have had no messages appear at all, so it must have appeared while in dealers
I am going to ring dealer on Monday and ask the questions
also Vespa I don't get a beep when snowflake lit!

Well, I can only say that 90% of my journeys are less than 10 miles and often no more than a couple of miles. Nonetheless, since I had the battery replaced 2 months ago, it has worked as expected.

My best friend was down for the New Year, he drives a new Audi S4, which I don't hold against him. Anyway, I quizzed him about Audi's stop/start system. He said it works flawlessly. However, under certain conditions, which are defined in the owner's handbook, it is disabled. When this happens, a message is displayed to inform the driver that stop/start has been disabled. Also, he said that as soon as the conditions have ceased it returns to normal working. His driving habits are short urban journeys. Perhaps there is something in the theory that the XE batteries are not man enough for the job.

In normal mode my S/S has not worked, apart from once, since November. If I put it into Eco mode however it works fairly often. I suspect because the air con etc are put into low power drain mode. The car has to be up to operating temp though.

I think these observations are spot on as to the foibles of S/S.

My warranty is due to run out in May so I am having the dealer give the car a full checkover to be on the safe side for any faults. I have a few minor issues that need sorting.
